There are several theories about his mysterious death including a 1996 medical evaluation by a Dr. Benitez based on historical records and the notes of Dr. John J Moran, Poe's attending physician in Washington College Hospital. Dr. Benitez's conclusions are that Poe may have died of rabies based on his condition and symptoms at the time of his stay at the hospital. Best of luck.

hey im working on a project on edgar allan poe. i found out in my research that drugs were highly available at the time and i highly belive it was either a drug overdose on launanum...or he was used to vote repeatadly because he was in different clothes and was allergic to the alchohol they possibly had given him to vote. but, i am doing a story about how he died and i would like an interesting muder story to present. please give ideas about people in poes life that could have caused his death? is there any proof he might still be alive?

Edgar allan poe died of a drug called opium...he wrote in one of his poems that he was afraid to die alive...the drug opium slowed his heart beat down...so it would only beat once a minute or once ever 2 minutes. so doctors thought he was dead...but he wasnt...therefor he was buried alive...and probably died from a) hunger or b) insects ate him alive

there are many theories on how poe died, some involve drugs, some involve alcohol, mugging, fowl play, and even a rabies theory. dont go to just one about how he died, since no one knows exactly how he did, and why are you trying to find stuff for your kid when its her assignment? isn't that just gonna let her think that she can just have other people do her stuff for her? I think that Poe was kidnapped by gangs and was forced to vote over and over so that the gangs candidate would win. Then he was plied with liquor and beaten. That would explain why his he was wearing clothes that did not belong to him. And the day he was found was Election Day.

A while a go, doctors were given the conditions of Poe and the circumstances in which he was found. The symptoms were those consistant with rabies. SO, as he was found with different sets of clothes he was most likely kidnapped by thugs and forced to vote over and over for their canidate on election day. The seemed to have had him wasted also. So is it not possible that they left him after they were done with him and then something came up and bit him? (And for the whole STD theory-who drops dead in other people's clothes on election day?)
