MLS are the initials for a family friend of Edgar and Virginia Poe. Her name was Marie Louise Shew and she was the daughter of a local doctor and had some medical training of her own. Known to the family as "Loui", she cared for Virginia and Edgar during Virginia's illness and after Virginia's death, she attempted to care and cousel Edgar during his recovery. Edgar was said to be deeply appreciative of care and loyalty to Virginia and himself.
