WIRE:10/17/2000 12:32:00 ET Iran minister wants oil used as anti-Israel weapon

TEHRAN, Oct 17 (Reuters) - Iranian Defence Minister Ali Shamkhani called on Islamic countries on Tuesday to use oil as a weapon to support the Palestinians in their struggle against Israel, the official IRNA news agency reported. "Using instruments such as the production and sale of oil and reviewing political relations with world countries based on their support for intifada (Palestinian uprising) are among the methods which can give practical results," IRNA quoted Shamkhani as telling senior military officials.

More than 100 people, all but seven of them Palestinians and Israeli Arabs, have been killed in more than two weeks of Israeli-Palestinian violence. Iran, which does not recognise Israel, condemns the Middle East peace process as a sellout of Palestinian and Islamic rights.
