What areas should Possum Trot map?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : orienteer kansas : One Thread

Dick N. called me this evening and asked if I had any thoughts about areas PTOC should map (new or updated areas). A mapper (I believe he is from Russia) will be in KC after the US Champs and PTOC will be putting him to work. But, they are not yet certain where. I immediately thought of a couple of state parks that are just north of Kansas City (Weston Bend and Watkins Mill). Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

SWOPE PARK!!!!!!!!!!!

I second the ideas about both areas. I would like to see some areas that are west of KC as well. Tom Wolf had done some work on the Hillsdale recreation area. (And the area on the Elk River trail near Independence has possibilities.) But I think park o is the wave of the future and a number of small park maps in kc would probably be the best value.

When I talked to Dick on the phone I forgot all about Swope Park. But, when I sent an email to the PTOCers I remembered it. So, rest assured Snorkel -- I did suggest Swope Park.

Something that would be pretty unique would be to map some industrial areas, with warehouses, junkpiles, and abandoned buildings. I think the variety of terrain may be higher than you might think of in a typical urban setting. There would, I think, be much more around than in residential streets. It's something to think about.

The area with old warehouses along I-70 in KCMO by the river and south of the old airport always looked intriguing to me.

PTOC's mapper -- "Fema" -- is apparently hard at work updating the Knob Noster map. The next project will be Weston Bend State Park. I'm not sure how long Fema will be around, but I hope he gets a start on Weston Bend.

Mark Roodhouse tracked down a decent looking base map. The park told him it was from USGS. But, I've seen the USGS and the map Mark got...Mark's map is no USGS. Mark also walked around some of the trails with a GPS and the base map includes the GPS data.

I just heard a rumor that OK was thinking about dragging one of their old maps out again for re-fieldchecking. Apparently it is going to be converted to OCAD.
