What made him write such strange stories?

Poe had a very troubled childhood and I think this contributed to these rather interesting stories that he wrote. You see, at a very young age Poe saw his mother die of tiberculosis. As his life goes on a person he had a crush on died from this awful disease as well as his step mother and his young wife. Poe's biological father left his mother and family when Poe was about two years old. His step father (John Allen) immediately dissowned him when Poe rebuked him for having affairs while his own wife was in the other room dying of tiburculosis. Since all the men in Poe's life abandoned him, and all the women loved him and cared for him Poe looked upon women as angelic figures, but had social problems with men later in his life. If you had a childhood like that I'm sure you'd be pretty troubled also, and Poe just happened to show his pain by writing it down. :)

Umm. I don't completely agree with you on that answer. Edgar A Poe isn't all that Mal treated. His mom did certainly died, and his father did left him at a very early age, but Poe was adopted by two great, rich parents who gave him, many things he needed. Like a good education, and i mean private academies. They were extremely devoted Poe, it was Poe's own nature that caused him to write many things that he did, and his own fault to adopt on drinking and gambling.

Edgar Allan Poe was a Master of the macbre. He wrote many beautiful poems about love and other things. Why not ask why Stephen King writes as he does or Ann Rice. These are gifted artists. They not only write about terror, they also write beautiful stories. The poem "The Raven" is a wonderful poem. Yes, an artist's work does reflect their spirits, all artists; painters, writers, singers, song- writers, and actors.

Poe was heartbroken of the loss of his childbride Virginia. Such a large percentage of artists are eccentric........Jim Morrison for example. It would be almost impossible to get inside Poe's head without his writing.

Poe's storys and poems are classics.

I just thought that I'd let you Know that Poe never was never actually adopted by John Allan as he refused to do so.

I don't know why I'm bothering to answer this but here it goes.

Poe wrote "such awful" things because that's what the public wanted. He wrote about topics that the public was interested in. But to lump all of Poe's works into a catagory such as "awful things" indicates you haven't read any of Poe's other works. Go to http://eapoe.org for a reiable account of his life and works.

True, Poe didn't have a happy life but how do you explain his comedies?? Hmmmmmmm?

well he had a very sorry life, I will have to stay. Yes his mother and father died at this boys early age. After that his brother, William, died young and his sister, Rosalie, became later insane. The people he loved most died. As soon as he got close to some one they either died or got realy sick.....His life was based on death. Most of his stories were based on awful things because that was what he was use to.
