Some map reading practice -- how would you do this leg?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : orienteer kansas : One Thread

Take a look at this leg. How would you do the leg? What features would you be looking for? What would be your attack point? What would your strategy be for this leg?

The leg is from a training camp I was at in 1991 or 1992 (I don't remember which). It is a map that is immediately south-west of Uppsala, Sweden. Uppsala, as you'll note doubt recall, is the home of OK's Swedish Chapter (the Wallenborgs). It might also give a hint of the type of terrain that will be used for next year's Oringen.

The controls on the map are not numbered -- the leg goes from the control at the bottom of the image to the control at the top of the image. Sorry if anyone was confused.

For what it is worth, I checked my records and the training camp was in the winter of 1991.

If the woods are quite fast I'd go a bit left of the line to be sure to run by the long marsh, then up on the higher ground to see the sort of channel with the little marshes in it.

At some point of the woods thickness or extremely rocking ground, I'd head around the fields. The faint trails to the right of the leg look like the really windy, vague type.

My first thought was to go to the left, staying in that nice yellow area. My attack point would be the bottom of the "S". No, change that. When the field starts appearing to the right of the trail.

With more experience, and confidence, I would follow Mook's route, closer to left of the line, crossing the big trail, just slightly to the left of the rocky knoll and small marsh. Then catching the long marsh, running along the right side of it, keeping an eye out for the line of boulders to the right of the line, near the control.

I would go a bit left of the straight line. I would try to hold a line that would -- if I kept going -- take me to the letter "S." I would try to stay far enough left that I didn't run through the thickest part of the marsh just before the control. Once I've passed the march and run up the hill, I'll turn right and look for the control.

Fritz' route -- through the open area on the left -- seems good. I'm sure it is not the fastest. But, it is simple and the footing would probably be good (giving the legs a bit of a rest).

Going right of the straight line doesn't look so good. The open area in the beginning of the leg is tempting. But, the approach to the marker looks a bit confusing. The trails might be hard to find (and confusing). The small yellow marshes, however, would probably be easy to see.
