Bob,

The "Pit and the Pendulum" was first printed in "The Gift: A Christmas and New Years Present for 1843" in Philadelphia in 1842. It was reprinted in the "Broadway Journal" in May of 1845. It has been said that this tale was taken from Leonard Gallois' translation of Juan Antonio Llorente's "Critical History of the Spanish Inquisition". He is also said to have borrowed from "The Iron Shroud" the idea of the walls closing in on a victim. (Arthur H Quinn in "Edgar Allan Poe - A Critical Biography")

Regards,
