What time are the subs coming on ?

Thanks ANON, Is It OK if I use this inside info on my pathetic little web site? A pathetic web site dot com

-- Anonymous, October 15, 2000

That's not fair Ann None. There's 12 in that team - including your good self playing Ann advanced role infront of the two strikers. Given that Boro often turn up with insufficient players themselves, I can see Robbo not being best pleased.

PS. That's not the team I saw practicing today at The Rivorside (C-l-S).

Newcastle have NEVER lost in the League at the Riverside Stadium. The club has won two and drawn two of the four meetings. Note: Boro did win 3- 1 in a Coca-Cola Cup fourth round game at the Riverside in Nov 1996. Boro's last home League win over Newcastle was 3-0 at Ayresome Park in the old Division Two in August 1991, Paul Wilkinson, Mark Proctor and Willie Falconer the scorers. Boro's last top division home win over Newcastle was 2-0 in August 1977. The last two meetings here have ended 2-2. Newcastle did not have best of records in away games at Middlebrough before the move to the Riverside. They failed to win any of their last 10 games at Boro's former Ayresome Park home, losing six. Newcastle have never failed to score in five League and Cup visits to the Riverside Stadium.

    THE TWO ROBSON'S

Bryan Robson won 64 of his 90 England caps under then national manager Bobby Robson between 1982-90. Bryan captained England captain in 63 of those 64 games. He scored 20 of his 26 England goals under Bobby.

    Middlesbrough (League figures unless stated)

This is the club's 6th season in the Premiership, and the 3rd in succession in the top division.

Boro's best Premiership finish came in 1998-99, when they came 9th - their best League finish for 19 years.

Twice been relegated from the Premiership, in 1993 & 1997. Relegated in controversial circumstances in 1997. They were deducted three points after failing to fulfil fixture at Blackburn in Dec 1996 (Robson claimed he was without 23 players through illness and injury). It was ruling that was to prove crucial to their survival hopes - the club eventually missed out on safety by two points.

Club finished 12th last season. Ended the season well, losing only two of their final 14 games, winning 6.

    THIS SEASON

Beaten twice in 13 Premiership games, either side of the summer break. Those defeats came in home games this season against Leeds and Everton. Boro have won four of those games - all away.

Yet to win at home this season in four games (2 draws, 2 defeats). In fact, club has not won its last seven home games, either side of the close season (4 draws, 3 defeats).

Including last season, Boro have won only four of their last 15 games, which have all come away from home - at West Ham, Everton, Coventry and Southampton.

Club's last home win was 1-0 against Sheff Wed on March 25, Andy Campbell scoring the winner. Boro's only win at Riverside in any competition this season was 2-1 against Macclesfield in Worthington Cup second round, first leg on Sept 19.

By contrast, Boro are unbeaten in four away games this season, winning two and drawing two.

Have scored in every game this season (8 Prem, 10 in all comps). In fact, they have scored in each of their last 20 Premiership games. The last team to stop them scoring was Leeds in a 0-0 draw at the Riverside on Feb 26.

One of two Premiership clubs (going into weekend) yet to keep a clean sheet this season. Have conceded in all eight Premiership games and in all 10 games in all competitions. Last shut-out was away at Everton on final day of last season.

The club have also attempted to sign Steve McManaman, Ugo Ehiogu, Chris Sutton and Steve Watson since the end of last season. Boro agreed a fee with Real Madrid for McManaman but he refused to move. Boro had a #9m bid for Ehiogu accepted by Villa but the player did not want to talk at least until after the European Commission announces its ruling on the future of the current transfer system on October 31. Steve Watson opted to join Everton from Aston Villa instead, while the club pulled out of signing Sutton when he took too long to make a decision. Boro have most recently been linked with #4.5m rated Cameroon international defender Lucien Mettomo but he has now returned to his French club St Etienne after a week's trial.

Appointed in May 1994, taking over from Lennie Lawrence. Only Man Utd's Sir Alex Ferguson has been in charge with a current Premiership side longer. Twice won promotion to the Premiership with Boro in 1995 and 1998. Also relegated from top division in 1997. Led Boro to three major Cup finals (all lost) - 1997 and 1998 League Cup finals and 1997 FA Cup final. Won six major honours during almost 13 years as a United player - two Premiership titles, three FA Cups, one European Cup-Winners' Cup. Won 90 caps (26 goals) for England. Was assistant to Terry Venables at Euro '96. Quick to rule himself out of the running for the England job. He said he needed more experience at club level before making the move up to international management. Victory tonight would give him his 50th success in the Premiership.
