Saudis to take measures against Israel unless attacks stop

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- Saudi Arabia warned it intends to "take firm measures to face the Israeli attacks against the Palestinians" if the attacks are not immediately stopped or if there are "attempts to disparage" Jerusalem's al-Aqsa Mosque, the official daily al-Watan reported Saturday.

Other newspapers Saturday called on Arab governments, most of which have strong ties with Washington, to exert "economic pressure" on the U.S. if it continued to provide financial and political support to Israel. They said the "economic weapon," an apparent reference to Arab oil, "is in our hands and can have great effect in stopping the obvious Israeli humiliation of the Arabs, their rights and their holy sites."

Quoting an unnamed official source, al-Watan said Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz delivered his country's warning on Friday night in telephone calls to world leaders, including President Bill Clinton.

The prince, the source said, told the leaders: "King Fahd instructed me to tell you that Saudi Arabia, leadership and people alike, will take firm measures if the Israeli aggression against the Arabs, the Islamic holy shrines and the Palestinian people continue...It is in your best interests and the interests of our relations and the interests of Israel and the Jews to know that."

Prince Abdullah said that "we seek peace based on justice...and some think we are consumed when we talk about peace, forgetting that Israel is responsible for destroying the peace process, because we know it is stronger than us in obtaining assistance from others...But until when will this assistance continue? This means we will not sit idly by."

This was the first Saudi indication of the kingdom's growing frustration with what is seen as Washington's unconditional support for Israel, the object of unanimous Arab condemnation for its use of force against the Palestinians in the past two weeks, during which more than 100 people were killed.

The prince last week decorated some 50 Palestinians with medals in a visit to a hospital in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, where they were being treated for serious wounds received in clashes with Israelis. Abdullah warned that his country would respond to Israel if it continued hostilities.

His comments came as the official Saudi press demanded that the Arab leaders "take serious and clear action" against Israel "rather than just denouncing and condemning."

The Palestinian-Israeli clashes erupted on Sept. 28 after Israel's right-wing leader, Ariel Sharon, visited al-Haram al-Sharif, a Muslim site that houses al-Aqsa mosque, one of Islam's holiest shrines.

Intl. Anti-Zionist Movement Issues Statement

TEHRAN TIMES POLITICAL DESK

TEHRAN The International Anti-Zionist Movement has issued a statement calling on the heads of Islamic countries to break their silence and use their economic, political and military means to stop the massacre of the innocent Palestinians by the Zionist soldiers. The statement proposed that Islamic countries should reduce their oil exports to countries backing the Zionist regime by 10 to 20 percent to show their protest against the crimes committed by the Zionists.

It also said that the Islamic countries should declare a no-fly zone over northern Palestine, Gaza Strip and the West Bank of Jordan River to prevent the flight of Israeli planes and helicopters, similar to what the United States did in Iraq or NATO did in former Yugoslavia. The statement further proposed that a joint air force should be formed by the Muslim states to provide air cover for Gaza Strip, West Bank and northern Palestine and shoot down the Israeli planes and helicopters that attack the defenseless Palestinians.
