Why did Cleo only have ten lines to speak?

Why did Cleo only have 10 lines of dialogue last night. It didn't even seem worth it for her to even show up in that episode. She had almost nothing to do, so why even appear?

I agree that her input was minimal. The only reason I was interested was the comment that the patient made that "she sounds like your wife" and Peter wholeheartedly agrees.

Uh-oh.... Are TPTB trying to tell us something?

Maybe we told TPTB something ... there were a LOT of postings last season about how most fans didn't like Cleo's character. Which reminds me ... I was watching the TNT rerun epi last night (came in partway through so I don't know the title) but it was the one where Cleo and Dave are examining the little girl after a car accident and discovered she was sexually abused by her father. I thought Cleo was better than usual there -- she was very gentle and as caring as Cleo gets with that little girl. One of my other favorite Cleo moments is when she and Benton were getting a dressing-down from Romano and she fires back at him, "I KNOW how to read." I hope TPTB improve the Cleo character.

Because there IS a God in Heaven and He has heard my prayers (Or maybe because He is an ER fan and he doesnt like Cleo either) =)

I am repeating myself a lot today on different threads, but I was pretty disappointed w/ Cleo last night, because I want to like her and her comments didn't help. I remember when she first came on she was okay...her and Dave picked on each other...remember when Dave comes in after a fight, and Cleo had warned him earlier, but she cleans him up anyhow, right before Benton comes up and puts the moves on her *again*? She needs more humorous scenes. If TPTB know how much some people dislike her, then they need to improve her, or are we supposed to not like her?

Most of the times, TPTB put characters that we'd like, but sometimes they put someone like Romano or...uh...whats the name of that moron from Harvard that was going out with Lucy? Do you think that Cleo could be that kind of character too? maybe to make Benton or someone else look better?

-- jules (jules@operamail.com), October 13, 2000.

His name was Dale, Jules. Maybe Cleo is supposed to be like him. Romano may be repulsive, but at least he is funny. I loved his scenes with Peter last night. Cleo, on the other hand, is just annoying.

I don't want to sound racist here, but I didn't like Cleo's line about the med students. Something like "something's wrong here, there's not a black face there. Doesn't that bother you Peter?" I thought Peter's answer was good "I see six faces, that's hardly a representative sample", but I wonder where they are going with that and what point they are trying to make. This was discussed this summer when the addition of the Indian med student was announced, but I think ER has a pretty good mix of races. I just wonder if that is going to be a theme with Cleo?

Personally, the less I see of Cleo the better. Maybe they are trying to give her more than one dimension or something. I guess she wasn't aroung when Benton was telling Gant he didn't check the box saying he was black when he entered med school.

The major difference between Romano and Cleo is that I love to hate Romano and I just hate Cleo (she gets on my last nerve). I shouldn't say I hate Cleo because I have no idea who she is. I think she would be great as a recurring character (like Dr. Coburn), where we didn't have to decide if we liked her, but unfortunatly she is not.

Dale, of course, thank you Katrina...that guy was so much like a worm...and he does get on my nerves just like Cleo. I like Dave beacuse he is to Carter what Jughead is to Archie. They complement each other somehow. But Cleo...she shouldnt be into peds, she should be into anesthesia (oh my spelling just gets worse each day). I 've been watching reruns and I think Romano is a great character, I've never seen something that made me thing "that's out of character for Romano", for a late addition, I think the writers have done a good job with him.

My speculation with regard to Cleo's throwaway scene in the premiere is that possibly it was part of a larger scene, which was cut out. Maybe she mentioned something else about it to Peter (or someone else) in one of the draft scripts, but we didn't see that. Otherwise, I'm not sure what the point was.

You mean Cleo was in the episode?:) You remember in season 5 Lucy had alot of lines and then in season 6 she didn't and they killed her off? Well maybe they are going to kill Cleo off this season. I was only kidding BTW. Sorry if I offended any Cleo fans. I don't know why they gave her less lines and I really couldn't care.

-- Cammie (rmaelhorn@home.com), October 17, 2000.

Hey, remember how they killed Lucy off and she's not on the show anymore? :)

-- Cecelia (evilstoat@hotmail.com), October 17, 2000.

Andie, I'm still a Lucy fan. I was really mad when they killed her off. I was just saying how she went from alot of scenes one season to hardly any last season and then was killed off, and now Cleo is having hardly any scenes. I don't know if there are any Cleo fans out there. I would be shocked if there were any.

I'm a cleo fan. She can only work with what the writers give her. She's a great match for Benton. Are some of you threatened by a beautiful black woman?

-- kel (kindschi@pldi.net), October 20, 2000.

No, we're not threatened by a "beautiful black woman". The simple fact of the matter is, that C-3PO could easily beat her in the 'humanity' category.

What does race have to do with anything? Mmm? We certainly haven't based our judgements of her acting on her race.. SKIN COLOR IS A NON- ISSUE!

sorry.. had to get that out.. this sort of comment really bugs me.. it's so.. predjudiced!

-- Sitara (artemis@sundarams.org), October 20, 2000.

Kel, are you assuming that no one on this board is a beautiful black woman? Well, well. How about that.
