I wish I could afford to travel were someone had to handle my baggage.

The airlines are about like the Post Office. When you handle the volume (bags vs letters, etc.) something will fall through a crack somewhere. Over 99% of lost luggage is eventually recovered. To increase your odds, there should be identification both inside and outside the luggage. Make your luggage stand out by putting tape or decals or bumper stickers or something on the outside. Lots and lots of luggage looks identical and someone can grab your luggage by mistake.

Also when traveling, be prepared just in case by including essentials, particularly prescriptions and valuables, and a change or two of clothing in your carry on-luggage.

I have not had anything lost, but I have had luggage go on an earlier flight and show up in the airport before I did. When I arrived at the baggage carousel at my destination, my bag was just sitting in the luggage area, basically unattended for hours. I was glad to find that nobody had picked it up or taken anything out of it. I have also had my luggage go on a different flight and show up hours LATER, creating scheduling problems for me.

So...I figured out a way to make sure that all my clothes and gear would fit into the permitted 2 carry on bags. I guess it's traveling frugally! Even on 2-week business trips, I could get my entire wardrobe, laptop, etc. squeezed into 2 bags. By keeping my luggage in my hands, I avoided a lot of headaches and I recommend this to anyone else. Just wear the same thing a lot, kind of like at home.... :)

Thanks for the info, Maureen. Happy trails!

Years ago, as we were traveling from Alaska to Nebraska for our wedding, the suitcase containing my wedding dress got sent to Chicago instead of Omaha! It showed up about two days later, much to my relief!

In August I flew from Atlanta GA. to Newark NJ. Well, they lost our luggage. It did turn up later, but no one working for the airline could explain to me why it was put on a plane for JFK NY when the tags on the suitcases was clearly marked Newark NJ. I just wish I could get the answer to that one question.

My suitcase got sent to Lewiston instead of Lewistown Montana last Feb. when I went to visit a friend by bus. 42 hours from my house to hers. The really frustrrating part was people laughing at me when i was on the phone trying to get something done. I didn't even raise my voice. The suitcase was there the next night.
