South American Haven

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

With rumours surfacing that we are interested in a Honduran centre back, meaning we would have seven South American players here if we signed him, are we importing too many players from this area?

Whilst it remains a previously untapped market which we are obviously breaking into, Is this going to be to the detriment of the mix of nationalities at the club. We are in dnager of losing our core of Brits which Bobby only advocated at the start of the season. Bobby also stated that players coming into this country are not world class, yet could you label Solano, Cordone and Gavilan world class?

In the football world we are getting a name for signing South American names now and this seems to fly in the face of Bobby's comments re. having a British core to the team.

While we have dyer, Shearer, Cort, Speed, Lee, Hughes, Barton and Glass, they are in danger of being swamped by Spanish speaking colleagues.

Does anyone else think that we are going a bit too far in the search for players and we should concentrate on signing British players from lower leagues (i.e. Lua Lua), especially as Bobby stated that there are many talented players in the lower leagues.

Of course, in our quest to get a share of the international football market a la Man United, it can't do any harm to be spreading the United brand to places like Peru, Paraguay, Chile and Argentina. In fact, there was a letter in the Mag from a bloke who was in Rio and wanted to go to the Maracana to watch Botofoga (who play in black and white) playing someone else. He could find NUFC shirts in the malls of Rio but no Botofoga ones.

Gazza's having a pop at the number of foreign managers and players in the Prem. He's talking sense (report on Sporting Life website) IMHO.

He rightly points out that the French bring players through the ranks and look where they sit on the International Football Tree. Hey you could almost call them the fairies if the International Football Xmas Tree!

What harm would it do to limit the number of foreigners in a team to 5 or 6? What harm could this do?

At Newcastle we are in danger of being in the position that if we have to field 5 Brits, it isn't easy!
