400 mm for Canon EOS

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

I am looking for a non-pro but good 400EF lense (f4.5 or 5.6 with image stabilisator). Is there something like 400/4.5? 400/5.6 seems to be oldfashioned (no IS) and Canon will (as they say) stop manufacturing this lense. ??Perhaps is the best option 300/4IS + converter or Sigma 400/5.6, Tokina 300/4, Tokina 300/2.8??

Thanks for your help

If you want I.S. functionality you have no choice but to go with a Canon lens.

In the 'non-pro' catagory there is only 1 option available to you and that is the 75-300 4.0-5.6 USM IS and to get to 400mm you would have to use a third party TC, which would take you to f8.

All of Canon's other long lenses that have the I.S. feature are 'L' series lenses, and you indicated that that is not what you are looking for.

The 300mm f:4L USM IS with a 1.4X TC or the 100-400 f:4-5.6L USM IS are the only real good choices here. I get to 450mm with a 75-300 USM IS and a Kenko 1.5 TC, but the quality is less than desired.

I'd go with the 100-400 zoom as it has a reputation for being about as sharp as the 300 with TC, and would be quite convenient.

Thanks for your answers! I will probably wait for the new 400/4 lense to find out if it is under 1800$. It should be, or 100-400 will be much cheaper purchase.
