England v Finland Match thread

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Starting this thread a bit early, but with no TV coverage - other than via some obscure pay-per-view cable company - there's likely to be much debate/discussion.
Like, which pub in the North Shields/Tynemouth area is showing it?

Under-21's only drew 2-2 with Finland, with that Leeds willy-head Alan Smith getting sent off. Tosser.

Hello there Clarky. Don't worry aboit being premature: I was just about to start a thread saking where people were drinking for the Filthy Makems game, whether people were rsiking the Filthy LondonMakems on the train up from London on the day of the game or were coming the day before and whether people thought there'd be that much bother. 3000 of the buggers, yer know.

Will the England game be webcast? The TV guide here claims it will be on ppv, but there's no listing for it by my cable company. Probably not worth the money. Anyway, we're supposed to get a South American WCQ game in the afternoon and the US v Costa Rica WCQ tomorrow night. Both on free tv. :-)

Now if anyone happens to know of anyplace around Baltimore showing our game on Monday, please post it here! I've now got a phys therapy appt at 1pm that day, so won't have enough time to get down to DC. argh!

It's on in Japan at 1 am (I shan't be watching it) so all you Asia folks it should be on a TV near you

I'm soon off to pre-match pints... and then to the Olympic Stadium. Good luck for England too. :)

Jussi, stop being so nice to the England team, They don't deserve it

btw, good luck to Finland....

Looks like there may be a webcast of the England game on Capital Gold. Try going here: http://www.sports.c om/football/capitalgold/

Am off to do a bit of unpacking. Back in a couple of hours to see if the link works.

They've kicked off folks. 0-0

Got the live feed for MOTD.....nothing much yet....still 0-0 Sherringham through clear in goal....started to lose control of the ball, keeper came out and rubbed his hand across Sherringhams ankle and the daft twat went down like a bag of hammers with the goal gaping.

Andy Cole was cynically body checked shortly afterwards......Finland alledging that Sherringham has just elbow one of their defenders in the area.....if he isn't careful they are gonna force the ref into red carding him........

-- Anonymous, October 11, 2000

Cole just fashioned a chance out of sod all......we really should win this, they are little beter that second/third division.....that will no doubt cue a Finland goal!

-- Anonymous, October 11, 2000

Cole and Teddy can't finnish

-- Anonymous, October 11, 2000

great ball across the area, straight under Coles foot!

-- Anonymous, October 11, 2000

Finland had a couple of chances.....Spunky looks a bit dodgy at times....Forsell is giving them some gip at the back.

-- Anonymous, October 11, 2000

half time 0-0 - the above pretty much applies......off for some food, talk to you in the second half.......IS THERE ACTUALLY ANYONE OUT THERE!

-- Anonymous, October 11, 2000

I'm here....just not interested....I only even bothered looking into this thread cos it was at the top of the list and everywhere else was quiet.....

-- Anonymous, October 11, 2000

hello....llo.....lo....oo there's an echo on here. The capital gold audio is excellent and it sounds like an exciting game. The conditions are brutal, near freezing "shabby old pitch" with no leaves on the surrounding trees! RAY PARLOUR HAS SAVED HIS NATION!!!

-- Anonymous, October 11, 2000

Shearer is looking better every game he doesn't play!

-- Anonymous, October 11, 2000

What a total load of unmittigated

CACK

-- Anonymous, October 11, 2000

I never ever thought I would find my self saying this......

HAWAY THE JOCKS!

-- Anonymous, October 11, 2000

Eh? Was Capital Gold actually webcasting? I had it on at kick off and there was just music. BBC flipped over to their annoying "we don't have the rights to this event" message. I gave up and watched the South American highlights show. Peru is basically out of contention unless they suddenly win all their games and one of the teams in the top 5 start losing them all. Peru is 6 points off even getting to the playoffs.

So. Any Scotland or Ireland webcasts?? ;-)

Why oh why did Sheringham go down for a pen when he had an open goal in front of him? Cole could easily have carried on after that body check. And why didn`t he play Owen? It stank!!!!(:o(

Why oh why did Sheringham go down for a pen when he had an open goal in front of him

Cos he's a daft tw@t that's why.......his sole aim was to try and get the keeper sent off.....quite how that helps anyone's cause when there is another one sitting on the bench is quite beyond me......I think Ts is taking thicko lessons off Poshpuff.

-- Anonymous, October 11, 2000

Well that's one point in the bag - goal difference nothing to write home about mind!

-- Anonymous, October 11, 2000

I really was a bad decision on his part - he could easily have stayed on his feet, and with an open goal in front of him - well it beggars belief!(:o|

As you know ITK, I`m not anti ManU, and I think Beckham was sadly missed. I think it was the oddest team out there - and can only assume that there were niggling injuries elsewhere which we didn`t know about. I fear England is in trouble right now, and I can`t see who is going to get them back on track. (:o|

-- Anonymous, October 11, 2000

Had England won today, it would have been better for the Toon as there'd have been less chance of the FA thinking "there's only one man can rescue us".

-- Anonymous, October 11, 2000

Dougal - I`ve decided that the `majority` on here are right - Wor Bobby is not young enough for the England Manager job. There!!! How positive did I sound?!!(:o)

-- Anonymous, October 11, 2000

ell, this is a (slightly) inebriated account from north Cheshire. Perhaps Pilgrim will add an air or realism..........?

Like many on here, I questioned the team selection. But WTF could I do??? Nowt, so forget the team selection (really??) and look at the performance.

Seaman played well - no more comment.

Neville (P) did nowt. He should not have started, but did. He was moved to LB, and Wes Brown came on with Barry leaving. I can't understand this. Up to this point,GB had played as well as most. Brown played well in the short time he was on the pitch. IMHO, he should have been a direct replacement for Neville. Keown and Southgate did as much as they could have been expected to do. On this performance, I'd keep them.

McMnmnmnmnmn came on for Sheri and didn't let the side down. But why was Sheri replaced? He was (one of) the best of a poor bunch, Ray Parlour started poorly and had a poor first half. He improved as the 2nd half and progressed but lacked conviction. He was unlucky with "the goal that never was" but in reality, his shot should have been a lot lower than the bar. I know of someone who would have scored. Scholes and Wise had a canny game and should remain part of "the squad".

Sheri, Cole (Andrew) and Heskey occupied the front. Of these TS was by far the best, so why Sgt Wilko decided to replace him with McMnmnmnmnmn, I can not understand. Sheri had a good game, while Cole tried hard, but kept up his scoring record for England. Heskey bustled, but in reality did nowt. IMHO, we could (should) have taken off any of Cole, Heskey or Parlour (in reverse order) to bring on either McMnmnmnmnmn or LKD. We needed somebody to run at the Finns. McMnmnmnmnm didn't.

I feel particularly disappointed with this result. Indeed, I feel tonight's result is poorer than last Saturday's. It is not out of the question to lose against Hermann. But to drop two points against Hannu, Seppi and their mates is unacceptable to me. Twice on the trot (allbeit with different "managers") we have employed the wrong tactics. The more this goeson,I willbetemptedto apply for the vacant manager's job. After all, I have most of the credentials - being vacant an' aal that.

BTW - on re-reading this thread, I have to say that those of you who thought Sheri should have stayed on his feet and scored...................you're a bunch f biased bar stewards. Believe me, he'd love to have scored. No question - so shut it.

-- Anonymous, October 11, 2000

Believe me, he'd love to have scored. No question - so shut it.

Oi you NO! I seen it time and again and I still maintain that the keeper barely touched him.....he knew that he had lost control and he didn't want to look like a prat.

IF the keeper had really touched him that badly, then the referee, who was less that 10 yards away directly in line, would have sent the keeper off.

He should have stayed on his feet and he BOTTLED it.......Cole on the other hand was the opposite.....cynically(sp) body checked, there is no way he could have stayed on his feet and the defender should have got the red card.......

-- Anonymous, October 11, 2000

Well,I (and the rest of us in Pilgrim's Place) disagree with you. TS was on his way to scoring (well, at least having a chance, but I'll leave the finer points to LR). The ref bottled it in front of a home crowd. Just like he did when the goalie handled ootside the box.

-- Anonymous, October 11, 2000

Screach - you are wrong. They were all diabolical. However, since the side was no better than an average Premiership side, that's hardly surprising. I'd have fancied the Toon's chances against that England side. BTW, who was Howard Wilkisnon referring to when he said that certaIn players had been told by their managers not to put too much into the game?

-- Anonymous, October 11, 2000

Dougal, my guess would be Harry Potter?

-- Anonymous, October 11, 2000

Just a point i've picked up on:

Can anyone actually give me an example of Beckham doing something beneficial for the England team, the goal against Colombia excepted....?

-- Anonymous, October 12, 2000

Min, it`s 8 o`clock in the morning, and I haven`t finished my first cup of coffe yet, so just a general reply to your question about Beckham. IMHO what Beckham does for England is he unsettles the opposition. He has a reputation for playing superb long balls with pinpoint accuracy, and this unnerves the opposition. It almost doesn`t matter whether or not he actually does it during an international match - it`s more the fact that they know what he is capable of that rattles them.

An even better player to illustrate my point is Big Al. It didn`t matter whether or not he was scoring goals, the opposition were terrified of him and often two and sometimes more defenders would be drawn to close him down, leaving gaps elsewhere.

The fact that England haven`t capitalised on the `fear` factor is a different kettle of fish - and would require at least two more cups of coffee before I dare risk applying my mind to something that complicated! (:o)

It's not over till the fat lady sings but she's getting out of bed!

One defeat and a draw, pretty poor. Five months off to get a semblence of a decent manager who can turn things around. England can still go on and qualify from here if they simplify things down and stop changin the tactice each game. Teams like Eire and Scotland have played the same formation for years now and players who come in know exactly what the set up is. This may limit things at the very to top of the game, but England are nowehere near the top of the game right now.

Another couple of bad games and it is time to wholeheartedly bring in the young guns. Obviously a bit of experience is needed but IMHO Southgate and Beckham can supply that. could be the start of something good.

As somebody said on here yesterday I may have helped England to get thrashed 4-0.

-- Anonymous, October 12, 2000

Well, i'll be around until about midnight [lunchtime] so, get that coffee down yer neck and convince me...; )

I know what you're saying, but on that basis we should play Gascoigne, Macmanaman and Owen [left out because..?] and Shearer should never have been allowed to retire.

I just wonder if Beckham is really the international class player that we're being told he is. Has he delivered the goods on the international stage? He's capable, but he hasn't really has he?

-- Anonymous, October 12, 2000

I do know exactly what you are saying Min. And no, Beckham hasn`t made the impact that he could have done - the same actually could be said about a lot of our players. BTW I would have played Macmananmanman and Owen. I think it helps to have some players in a team who`s reputations preceed them - but, of course, it would help a lot more if they performed up to the level of their reputations too! (:o)

Sorry if that was a bit garbled - I have been thrown completely off kilter by DeBuilder`s posting! Fat ladies? Getting out of bed? I`ll strangle Yelli if she`s set up a webcam at home!!!!!(:oO

-- Anonymous, October 12, 2000

Stop threatening your poorly daughter!! it's mothers like you that give mothers bad names and stuff.....

-- Anonymous, October 12, 2000

No, not garbled - i think you hit the nail on the head: players need to play up to their ability, fulfill their potential. Instead, we've got players relying on their [and each other's] reputation. And you NEVER win games on those terms.

Owen is right - none of the England squad play abroad except Macmanamanamanaman. Simple answer: none of them are good enough. Mentally or technically. They need a wake up call. Who can give them that?

BTW, the webcam? You mean, you didn't know? ; o ))

-- Anonymous, October 12, 2000

Oooh errrr Missus - she says blushing profusely!!!(:o)

I think we are pretty much in agreement Min!

And now I think I should go and put some clothes on!!!

BYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!
