famous sportsman in blackmail case

Has anyone heard the rumour about the former international sportstar who is currently involved in court in a blackmail case involving a prostitute and telephone sex. Apparently reporting restrictions haven't been lifted but if it comes out who it is the nation will be shocked.

A court has heard how a woman tried to blackmail a former international footballer by claiming she would release tape recordings of alleged phone sex between them to the media unless he paid her off.

The woman carried out the campaign for five years bombarding the former footballer with threatening letters and phone calls, Newcastle Crown Court heard.

The footballer, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, called the police after the campaign continued, fearing his reputation could be destroyed even though the alleged phone sex never happened, the court heard.

The woman, who lives in the north east, cannot be identified and has pleaded not guilty to two charges of blackmail.

Prosecutor Robert Woodcock told the court that the blackmail first started in 1995 when the defendant sent a letter to the footballer's workplace. He replied as he would to any fan mail by sending an autographed photograph of himself, the court heard.

Shortly afterwards the woman left a message for the footballer claiming to be a footballer and requested that the complainant phone her back. Mr Woodcock said: "The call was answered by this defendant and after a few minutes it became extremely explicit and he ended the conversation."

The woman carried on writing to the footballer and despite being cautioned for harassment in 1997 by police she continued her campaign, the court heard. In 1999 the footballer received a parcel containing two tape recordings of her voice.

The tapes alleged that the woman had recorded phone sex between the pair in which he urged the woman to touch herself while he was speaking to her, the court heard.

Mr Woodcock read a transcription of the tape. It read: "I have a tape recording of you and I could ruin your career and I want revenge. I will carry on doing it for the rest of my life unless you are nice to me. "

Mr Woodcock called the tapes "deluded rantings" from an "adolescent and immature woman". The trial continues.

Oh howay Dougal. Surley you have some inside informants that can pass the name across to Rik so he can publish it. I bet he'd even organise a competition/sweepstake.

It's not actually that revelatory: I just looked for a single female defendant being tried tomorrow who was also being tried today. There's only one. Just put "Newcastle Crown Court" into your search engine.

I see this story is front page in the Mirror today but they wouldn't or couldn't print the name. Just said that it was a friend of Gazza's and Des lynams.

So the woman left a message for the 'footballer claiming to be a footballer' - there should be plenty of those around, although less in Newcastle since Bobby started clearing them out :-)

Howay, someone tell me who it is I can't work it out. YOU CAN E MAIL ME , Pleeaseeeeee , I won't tell anyone that you told me and will kind of conceal the players identity when I spill the beans to the football world.
