an old friend called me last night at 2 am. he's going to New York to settle an old score, i don't want to go into too much detail but it's to do with his wife, her upbringing between 6 and 8 with her stepdad and something very horrific and gut turningly evil. I think you can fill in the gaps - he only found out last night and is off today. he says he's going to go through the courts to get this thing put away, but his instinct says something a bit more basic

what would you do in his shoes? on one side it may be best to leave it for his wifes sake on the other who else's life is he screwing up now?

However, it's his wife's well being that has to be the top concern not his need for vengeance, and deserting her a day after her telling hime this isn't likely to be too constructive or supportive. you've got no sense of revenge you lot.

You need to find the guy's current family and tell them, even if it anonymously. If he did it once he'll have done it again, it isn't something that people do as a one off and then stop. An anonymous tip off (letter, phone call, whatever) will take the in your face aggravation away but will bring it out into the open. The current 'family' of this guy will also have been living with it and may also be trying to work out in their heads how to bring it out. Your mate can be the agent provocatuer and walk away.

Personal violence won't help anyone. Although I do recall seeing an old Sweeney where a guy poured a big pan of boiling water over someone's groin as a retaliation, that looked satisfying.

I am all for a bit of vengence in fact I revel in it, however your friend is going to the Bronx (this guys home terf with his brothers around him) Basically he is going down to millwall by himself armed with a banana. He needs to sort his thoughts out into a logical process, one that will do the most damage to this person but with minimal amounts of risk to himself and his family. This will take some time and money and making contacts with the wrong kind of people. Just breaking every bone in this guys body is very short term in order for any sort of reparation to come anywhere near to what his wife suffered this needs to be long term and life ruining.

OK, you turn up on the guy's home turf, start bandying around all sorts of accusations, he denies them all, says your wife is just seeking revenge for some other wrong (unpaid debt, rebuffed sexual advance etc etc.). The family know him and trust him and side with him. If no one else comes out and accuses the bastard you've got no proof,only the word of your wife and the family may well trust her less. The police won't be interested. You could batter him and spend a few years being some jail queen's toyboy.

Sounds like a hopeless situation but good luck to the pair of them, I hope they don't do anything rash.
