A French light aircraft carrying two people has crashed into the Mediterranean Sea off Libya, according to reports.

The incident followed a mid-air collision during a rally, Libyan television reported.

It said the single-propeller, two-seater planes were on their way from Tripoli to Benghazi, 500 km (300 miles) to the east, when they collided over the Gulf of Sirte.

One of the aircraft landed safely in Baninah, near Benghazi, but the other crashed into the sea.

The fate of those on board the downed plane, which belongs to a French air club, is unknown.
