The leader of Yemen has called for weapons and soldiers to be sent to help the Palestinians fight Israel.

President Ali Abdullah Saleh said Arab countries should open their borders so the men and material could be shipped to the Palestinian territories. Interviewed on Yemen state television, he also said Arab governments should break off relations with Israel. In Lebanon itself, efforts are underway to try to arrange a possible exchange of Arab prisoners for three Israeli soldiers kidnapped by Hezbollah guerrillas on Saturday.

Hezbollah is said to want the release of all prisoners from Lebanon, and from the Hamas and Islamic Jihad movements, being held by Israel.
