Home Box Office Hosts Montgomery Screening Of 'HATE.COM: EXTREMISTS ON THE INTERNET'

HBO Documentary on Internet Hate Sites Was Produced In Association With The Southern Poverty Law Center

MONTGOMERY, Ala., Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Home Box Office and the Southern Poverty Law Center will host a special Montgomery screening of the HBO documentary HATE.COM: EXTREMISTS ON THE INTERNET on Tuesday, October 10, 11:30 A.M. at the Embassy Suites Conference Center. The advance preview of the film will be attended by local and state officials who battle terrorism, computer crimes and hate crimes as well as the staff of the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). The film was produced in association with the SPLC, and co-founder Morris Dees serves as the film's narrator. HATE.COM: EXTREMISTS ON THE INTERNET will debut on Monday, October 23 (9:00-9:45 p.m. CT), exclusively on HBO.

HATE.COM: EXTREMISTS ON THE INTERNET examines the growing movement of hate groups on the Internet, more than 350 at present. With more than 250 million people on the Internet and 150,000 more signing up every day, these sites target and recruit a new demographic of youthful followers to the Neo-Nazi movement and other hate groups. These hate Web sites have achieved success in projecting their gospel of hate worldwide more cheaply and effectively than ever before.

``HATE.COM should be required viewing for all those who value freedom and equality in this country,'' says narrator Dees. ``The documentary depicts a culture unique to the 21st century, an ideological Wild West where rural Klansmen, tattooed skinheads and college-bound boys-next-door exchange malicious ideas and terrorist tactics via the Internet.''

The Montgomery screening of HATE.COM will begin with remarks from Morris Dees, SPLC co-founder, and a luncheon for invited guests. The film screening will be followed by a panel discussion featuring:

HATE.COM is the latest from the team of producers Vince DiPersio and William Guttentag. While making HATE.COM, they gained access to the hate movement's most powerful, but elusive, leaders to question them about their politics and methods of on-line recruiting. They also interviewed the movement's most determined adversaries, including Morris Dees as well as FBI agents and local prosecutors. They paint a portrait of a cultural malady that is creeping into the ranks of America's educated middle-class youth with alarming ease.

``It was both fascinating and repugnant to witness first-hand a subculture pitted so firmly against the ideals of fairness and justice that most Americans cherish so deeply,'' says DiPersio. ``Personally, it served as a wake-up call about some of the extremely dangerous content our children can access on the Internet -- and I only hope that others will be similarly enlightened when they watch this film.''

``The Internet is clearly tied to America's future; it offers extraordinary opportunities, yet with hate sites calling for violence against minorities, troubling questions are raised on issues about limiting free speech,'' says Guttentag.

HBO has announced its planned launch of Hate Hurts, the companion cyber campaign to the HATE.COM documentary. The Web site www.hbo.com/hatehurts.com will be launched to coincide with the documentary's HBO debut on October 23, and will focus on the impact of hate on everyday lives and offer tactics for promoting tolerance. Hate Hurts will feature original, never-before-seen video of ordinary people who have encountered extraordinary hate in their lives. Featured content will also include ``Ten Ways to Fight Hate,'' provided by the SPLC, in an attempt to answer the question, ``What can I do about hate?'' The Web site will also be a forum for people to share their personal stories and reactions to the film.

Next spring, the SPLC will launch its newest program, an innovative new Web site, www.Tolerance.org that will serve as a national resource for tolerance, ideas and discussion. It will include games for children, stereotype tests for adults and a wide variety of forums to allow public expression after hate crimes occur.

HATE.COM: EXTREMISTS ON THE INTERNET is produced in association with the Intelligence Project of the Southern Poverty Law Center and is written, directed and produced by Vince DiPersio and William Guttentag. For HBO: supervising producer, Julie Anderson; executive producer, Sheila Nevins. The Southern Poverty Law Center is a nonprofit organization that combats hate, intolerance and discrimination through education and litigation. It began as a small civil rights law firm in 1971. Now it is nationally known for its legal victories against white supremacist groups, its sponsorship of the Civil Rights Memorial, its tracking of hate groups and its Teaching Tolerance education program.

HOME BOX OFFICE IS NOTHING BUT AN ORGANIZATION OF PINKO COMMIE SCUMBAGS WHO DILUTE THE GENETIC POOL WITH THEIR MEDIOCRITY. YEAH, SURE THEY HAVE THE "SOPRANOS," BUT WHAT ELSE HAVE THEY GIVEN US? TRIPE LIKE "SEX AND THE CITY???" OR WAIT, WAS THAT SHOTIME? IT DOESN'T MATTER. HBO IS FULL OF LOWLIFE SCUM AND NOW IT'S TIME TO "CLEAN HOUSE," IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN. WE WILL RID THE EARTH OF THE SCOURGE THAT IS HBO AND WILL GO DOWN IN HISTORY AS THE BRAVE WARRIORS FIGHTING FOR GENETICALLY PURE TELEVISION ENTERTAINMENT. WE WILL RISE UP AND CRUSH AND DESTROY HOME BOX OFFICE UNTIL IT IS A SMOKING PILE OF RUBBLE.
