White House e-mails still go astray

WASHINGTON - The Clinton White House has a new problem with its e-mail system that affects roughly one in every 100 computer messages, a spokesman confirmed yesterday.

The problem outlined in a three-paragraph memo circulated in the Executive Office of the President this week comes amid a criminal investigation and a congressional probe into a possible White House cover-up of an earlier computer problem. Presidential aides deny a cover-up.

"Until this problem is resolved ... all EOP employees must save and not delete all non-personal e-mail messages presently on your computer," White House counsel Beth Nolan said in the memo addressed to "All EOP Users" and computer users in the U.S. Trade Representatives office.

After being informed that the Associated Press had a copy of the memo, White House spokesman Elliot Diringer confirmed that the "error" in the e-mail system results in about 1 percent of e-mail traffic dating from April 15 not being properly stored in White House computer archives or being recorded with an incorrect header.

"Our computer contractor is working on this matter, and we hope that it will be resolved soon," Nolans memo stated. )2000 THE PLAIN DEALER. Used with permission.
