Solano to Man City?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

We've had a few discussions about the merits of Solano's place in the 1st 11, and with Man City reportedly preparing a #4 mill bid, should we sell him. My thoughts are that it is good money in the current transfer climate.

His sale would hopefully give Kieron Dyer a more settled and defined role on the right wing, enhancing his international aspirations.

We may lose Solano's crossing ability but Dyer is a more effective outlet especially in away games when we counter.

We have Gavilan in reserve who should really be making progress into the 1st team anyway by now and he could be better than Solano.

Solano's workrate has been questioned away from home and we won't win anything without hard work!

disagree debsy. Solano is more effective than you think i think... :-<

As you said we'd miss his crossing ability and as we've got no left midfielder (with the exception of Glass), just who would provide the crosses for Cort (when fit) and Shearer, I needn't remind you who it was on Saturday.

Solano is without doubt the best passer of a ball we have. He is worth his weight in Gold which is probably less than #4m at the moment when we have little creativity. As for giving LKD a more defined role, judged on this seasons performances he still has a lot to learn.

We need class players with creativity. We will win more games with creativity than hard work. Just watch Leics plummet down the league, all hard work, no creativity = dull games and few goals and even worse fewer points

I agree with what you say on the merits of Nobby, but he has his downsides as well. Dyer has got a lot to learn but he'll never learn if he doesn't play in the right place. No substitute for experience.

I get the feeling that Solano is quite an influential figure in a lot of ways. Captain of Peru, he seems very assured and professional. I suspect he adds a lot to the squad rather than his ability on match day. How does he act in training? Does he 'teach' and interact, or is he just one of the lads?

He also seems to act as interpreter/translator for the other South American players.

Christ man one little murmur and there's a lets get rid of Nobby saga .. i won't talk about last season will i nahhh thot not ... or the fifteen minutes he played at Maine Road ( those of you there ) , or for that matter the three golden opporunities he was involved in .. or the tackles he made on wanchope , or the tracking back he did at the end of the game . 4m ... haddaway Royle and im sure Bobby has said the same to him . Fickle lot us sometimes , what do yers want a Keane that pass dribble and cross ? Solano is a key player who also is nurturing Lua Lua and Amoebi , as can be seen by his motions toward them . Certainly a professional not a lad . Id never sell him in a million years .. unless the price was 10m to Real Madrid .

Optasoccer say:

HAVING have seen a bid for Laurent Charvet rebuffed by Newcastle manager Bobby Robson, Manchester City will not be turning to his Tyneside team-mate Nolberto Solano. Charvet was the subject of a reported #1 million bid, but with The Magpies expecting a fee of nearer #2 million, the defender looks unlikely to complete a move.

Speculation had suggested that Peruvian skipper Solano had also tracted the attention of Joe Royle but the City boss predictably ismissed the reports as "fantasy", as he embarked on a jet-setting trip to eye potential targets in World Cup action this weekend. Solano has already suffered the wrath of Robson, after playing for Peru whilst unfit and injuring himself, and has been unable to hold down a regular starting berth this season because of the maturing presence of England international Kieron Dyer.

After being linked with moves to Real Madrid and Manchester United last season, the wide man is very highly regarded within the game and enhanced his hopes of forcing himself back into Robson's plans by setting up the winner for Alan Shearer at Maine Road last Saturday.

Although the international commitments remain a problem for both the player and Newcastle, Robson is believed to want to hang onto one of the classiest midfield providers in The Premiership.

I'm not doubting Nobby's ability but I'm looking at his position within the team and those around him.

IMHO. We need Dyer's pace in the side, without him we are one paced and ineffective. I see Dyer as a right winger, we need stronger midfielders in the middle. Solution Dyer plays on the right wing.

No doubting Nobby's creative attributes and professional application but for the team I reckon we're better off with Dyer. When Bassedas comes back I'm sure he'll be one of the first on the team sheet. Speed will take the other central role so it's Dyer v Nobby. Dyer should play because of the simple fact that he'll be in the country and available for selction.

Shearer Cort Lua-lua Speed Bassedas Dyer.

What a front six!!

Add Barton on the right and Domi on the left at the back pushing forward and we'll get totally shafted at the back, looks good doing forward but there'd only be Shearer and Speed tracking back in that team.

Sorry De Builder but have you seen Bassedas play yet ... i think not , going on past transfers id reserve judgement for the time being . More importantly if we are going to be a top class side we need options and if that means Nobby on the bench from time to time then well have one hell of a squad . Think bigger picture man , there's no doubting Dyer's ability but i reckon he's learnt plenty off Nobby . The lad is one of the best players in the premiership ... you'd be scared sh1tless if he lined up against you , think about it like that and a semblance of reality might come over you : - ))

I disagree Kegsy.

The Colchester fans commented on Lua-Lua as a back tracker and willing to defend when necessary. Dyer has had to just that when playing in the middle and Speed and Bassedas are experienced enough not to leave the back four totally exposed.

If they can learn to defend as a team we'll thrash a few teams just with the pace of Dyer and Lua-Lua.

Re: Bassedas, YBR says he hasn't picked his best side this season because he hasn't been able to pick Bassedas yet. I'll go for the opinion of Bobby pretty readily.

Sting, as I've said I don't doubt nobby's creative attributes etc etc but would you leave Dyer out or play Dyer in the middle if you're going to pick Solano?

-- Anonymous, October 05, 2000

Backtracking in the third division against erm, well erm (help Tre) is alot different to back tracking and picking up the likes of Beckham etc. Dyer doesn't back track that often and is not the best tackler of the ball. If Speed stays in the deep role then we lose out on his late runs into the box and it no doubt costs us a few goals. Yes as an attacking team that looks good but I would be extremely worried in defence

Any alternatives offering a significantly greater deal of defence? Do we want to be playing with only one creative midfielder?

-- Anonymous, October 05, 2000

I'm yet to be convinced that having both Solano and Dyer in the same starting eleven is the best option. But that doesn't mean either one is surplus to requirements

-- Anonymous, October 05, 2000

I'm not saying that it isn't a bad team but we need to find balance both width and length wise. Whilst we may get better balance across the midfield, I feel that we'd be exploited at the back. I would be happier with a tighter midfield of Speed Lee Bassedas and either Dyer or Solano. More of a diamond formation than an out and out 4-4-2. But it wouldn't work.

We seem to be a much better team when Speed and Lee play together. It's tempting to play as much creative talent as possible, and Dyer and Solano interlink well together, but it isn't easy to balance the team like that. I don't think any of us know enough about Bassedas yet to how (or if) he will fit in, but from what I've read he will add some better passing ability in a central area, directing play between the two flanks and giving another route to the strikers rather than crosses from the wing. If you ignore injuries, we have a reasonable squad of midfield players, although we still lack defensive cover - bottom line, YBR has not yet had enough time to shuffle the options around. He shouldn't start discarding his aces till he's at done this.

Solano is going nowhere for #4mm - QED.

-- Anonymous, October 05, 2000

With our lack of midfield options and the dearth of midfielders available that are BETTER than Nobby (which would be the only reason to sell him), I can't see that there would be any justification for flogging him. Having said that, the sooner he loses Peru the better for NUFC.

-- Anonymous, October 05, 2000

Peru lost again yesterday and Nobby was substituted. Can they still qualify? Will Nobby say Toon for me?
