TOKYO, Oct. 4 (Kyodo) -- Retail prices of gasoline in Japan averaged 103 yen per liter as of Monday, up 1 yen over a week earlier and the highest since August 1997, the Oil Information Center said Wednesday. The price hike is due to increasing crude oil prices since September, said the center, which tracks petroleum prices.

Kerosene prices averaged 46.40 yen per litter, up 1.20 yen from a week earlier and the highest since March 1998.

Gasoline prices rose 2 yen in the Kinki, Chugoku and Kyushu-Okinawa regions and 1 yen in other regions.

The highest price was 106 yen in Chugoku and Kyushu-Okinawa, while the lowest was 101 yen in Hokkaido.

This is curious. Just a few days ago Japan said it had all the oil it needed.
