Wednesday October 4 11:36 PM ET Barak Heads for Israel After Mideast Talks Fail

PARIS (Reuters) - Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak headed home on Thursday after talks with Palestinian President Yasser Arafat failed to reach agreement to put an end to a week of violence, a senior Israeli official said.

He said Barak saw no point in resuming talks in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh so long as Arafat was refusing to sign an agreement which had been drafted at talks in Paris, brokered by Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.

``The prime minister is going home. There's no point in going to Sharm el-Sheikh. Arafat gave commitments. Arafat refused to sign,'' the official, who asked not to be identified, said.

He said Albright was going to Egypt to explain the situation to President Hosni Mubarak. Arafat was already heading for Egypt.

At least 66 people, most of them Palestinians, have been killed in the worst violence to sweep the West Bank, Gaza Strip and parts of Israel in four years.
