Saturday's match-winner Alan Shearer believes Steve Howey could hold the key to City's survival in the Premiership. Shearer has paid a warm tribute to his former club colleague and believes the defender will play a pivotal role for the Blues this season. "I had some great ding-dong battles with Steve when I was at Blackburn and I am just sorry that he wasn't out there on Saturday," said the former England striker. "He is a very accomplished defender and I have the utmost respect for him. Like I said, I have played against Steve and on the same team as him at Newcastle and I know which I'd prefer, I'd want him on my side every time. On his day, when he is fit, Steve Howey is one of the best defenders around. It is a shame he has picked up so many injuries in his career and that his jinx struck again on Saturday because I know he desperately wanted to play against us. What he needs is a long run in the side and I am sure he will make people sit up and take notice. City will certainly be a better side when Steve is playing. He could make a big difference and so could the supporters. They are great fans, and a lot like ours in that they are very passionate about their team and create a wonderful atmosphere. Maine Road deserves Premiership football and I always look forward to coming to it."

wonder how much he got paid to say that? Or perhaps he hasn't heard about those wonderful city fans outside.

Maybe he thought it would annoy the red half of Manchester?

Aye - and I think he's done that a few times.
