The Class of '55

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Anyone see that smart photo in the Times of the 55 team holding the FACUp after beating Man City in the Final? Obviously the point was that, after bossing the Cup in the 50s, we'd have hardly imagined we'd wait so long for a domestic trophy and that Man City have fared only marginally better, having beaten us in the league Cup final in 76. It was basically a meeting of sleeping giants feature and was grossly misguided in its assertion that both clubs have been fed such mediocrity that we are happy merely to be in the PL (What??). However, the photo was the bollox.

Yeah - it was pride of place on the table in the pub in Manchester on Saturday.

BTW - wasn't the guy holding the cup Jimmy Schoular? I initially thought it was Harvey, but I think the caption in The Times told me otherwise. The little guy on the right is an Oirishman (Casey??). I'm afraid I dunno who the one next to him with the apprentice Elvis haircut is.

Good effort Rik, but as far as I can tell none of those players played in the 55 final! Robledo was back in Chile, Harvey was a coach, and I think Brennan was in dispute with the club. Is the guy second from right Bobby Mitchell?

The team was meant to be Simpson, Batty, Cowell, Crowe, Stokoe, Scoular, Hannah, Davies, Mitchell, Keeble, Milburn, but Casey came in for Crowe and Len White for Davies.
