New subminiature Leica IIIf

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

In Sept Photokina show, Leica/Minox showed a new product, a subminiature reproduction of Leica IIIf. It is a functioning camera, a 1/3 scale of the original Leica IIIf, it takes 8x11mm film. With a 15mm f5.6 lens. Very cute The price in Toronto is C$600 about $400 USD

In one of the UK photo-magazines saw other cameras, the original Nikon-F being one of them. They look cute.Having tried Minox 9x11 format,I guess I`ll give this one a miss.

The problem with some of the old Minox subminiatures is their indifferent lenses. I for one would love to get my hands on one of these cameras with a Leitz lens. Think of the depth of field with a 15mm lens! You can scan the little negs and get the resolution of a contemporary digital camera coupled with the permanence of film.

Sure, it's cute but, frankly, I can't see the point of making a miniature that isn't a faithful scale model of the original. It's the wrong shape and there's no fast shutter speed dial in the position where it ought to be. The fitting of the base plate also looks different. There may well be other differences that I can't see from the photo.

Ray, Minox Leica I, IIIf, M3, Contax I are great money makers for Minox. For example in first two months after introduction, 8000 Minox Leica IIIf were ordered from Japan alone.

The picture of the Minox Classics are remarkly good

There are some samples of pictures taken with Minox Leica M3 by Marcus at

http://photos.groups.yahoo.com/group/minox- faq/lst?.dir=/minoxmarcus/Classic+Leica+M3&.src=gr&.order=&.view=t&.do ne=http%3a//photos.groups.yahoo.com/group/minox-faq/lst% 3f.dir=/minoxmarcus%26.src=gr%26.view=t

Minox is going to introduce Minox Rolleiflex TLR and a Minox Hasselblad SWC soon. These two models are made with exact proportion, unlike the IIIf thicker than proportional

There seems to be a niche market for such cute little cameras which can take real pictures.

Well, Martin, from what you say, Minox seems to have hit on a winner. Perhaps I'm just being too pedantic? :-)

-- Ray Moth (ray_moth@yahoo.com), May 27, 2002.

But where do you buy (or process) 8 x 11 mm film. Not at the corner drugstore?

-- Eliot (erosen@lij.edu), May 27, 2002.

Ray, it is good that Minox hit on a winner, the Classics help to keep the TLX/CLX/ GT-E going.

Hasselblad SWC 8x11

Eliot, any large photo store in US such as BH, etc sell 8x11 camera, color/bw 8x11 film and accesories and processing mailer

Or from http://www.minox.com/

8x11 Film and processing is more expensive then 35mm film.

The picture of a motorbike at the home page of Minox forum was taken with a Minox Leica M3 8x11 by minoxmarcus in Germany

Martin, those images are most impressive. BTW, please pardon my ignorance of Hasselblad but what does SWC mean? (This is off topic, I know, but I keep seeing SWC in different threads and nobody ever explains it - like wing-tip shoes, whatever they are).

-- Ray Moth (ray_moth@yahoo.com), May 28, 2002.

Ray,

SWC stands for 'super wide camera'.
Take a look at this Zeiss article.

Cheers

I was interested in buying a SWC on eBay last week and did some research. I read somewhere SWC means Supreme Wide Angle.

-- Mike Zingeler (mhzingeler@sanbrunocable.com), June 04, 2002.

Sorry, Should be SWC: Supreme Wideangle Camera.

-- Mike Zingeler (mhzingeler@sanbrunocable.com), June 04, 2002.

'Supreme' was used when it was first introduced (in the 50's). Later it was changed to 'Super'
