Do you have enough?

Do you wish you had more money, or are you financially content?

I wish I had more $ - NOT for luxury items, but to feel secure and to take care of business (dental bills, old student loans, etc.) --

I'd say we are financially content. We still have 10-15 years of student loans to pay off and some fairly high balances on at least 5 credit cards, but I don't have to worry about having enough money to pay our bills anymore.

Oh, and Gwen, I will be getting super DSL this month and I will be watching all your videos at Backslap. Right now it just takes way too long to download. :(

Not only do I not have enough $, I don't even have an income right now. I was just laid off and I've got to apply for unemployment & WIC & medicaid and all that good stuff. I don't know how the bills will get paid. And my piddlin little $1400 401k is not going to be touched. That's the only savings I've got for the kid's college.

It's taken me two months to save up the $$ to get my car fixed, so I guess I'm nowhere near comfortable.

We definitely would love to have more money. As it is right now, the fact that I need my wisdom teeth out is a major expense, we can't afford anything but yard-sale furniture, etc. I don't care if we're hugely rich, I would just love to be comfortable enough to know that it's not a big deal if we suddenly needed to pay for something, or wanted to go away somewhere for a weekend. I know that things will get better and it's just a matter of time, I just can't wait for that time. :)

We have enough, but would like more, because we're greedy like that. Or at least I am; I think Ian considered himself financially content when he was able to buy as many DVDs and videogames as he wanted to each month. I'll be financially content when I can give my Dad enough money to give up his stressful-as-hell job babysitting fuckwit employees.

I think we have almost enough money for contentment at this point...if only we'd learn how to save some of it. Old habits die hard, I guess, and living paycheck-to-paycheck is a big old habit.

-- Anonymous, October 01, 2000

We're okay because we don't have expensive tastes or hobbies. For example, I could afford a DVD player but I just don't think I really need to have one right this minute.

I wish I had enough money so that I could quit working for The Man and be self-employed.

I was going to gripe about how I am scraping by, but I don't have enough money to splurge on stuff I'd really like (like a cd-writer) and then I read Starmama's post. Damn. I am sorry! You sound like a really responsible person/mother and I feel like a turd for complaining. Best of luck to you!!!

(At first I read the title to this thread as "Do you *get* enough," and was looking forward to some spicy responses. Never mind; I'm a dirty-minded bad girl.)

I have enough money to live on, but not enough to take vacations and save the amount I want to. I hope this situation will correct itself after I finish up my master's program and can change jobs. But really, I'm not going to bed hungry, and I *do* have enough to at least contribute the max to my IRA every year, so I'm not that badly off.

Thanks Gardanna, that's sweet.

But, feel like a turd if you must...when I had no kid & was making 37k I could buy whatever I needed, but still wanted more...so go ahead and complain. Besides, even though we all know there's someone out there worse off than we are, those worse off people ain't nowhere around when we're lookin around our house and thinking "damn, I hate that I can't afford _________"

Nahmean?

We're very comfortable financially. But I always want more - more money, more everything. :-)

More sex!!! Yeah and mo' money. Yeah, lots and lots of money. And more sex. Oh yeah. I already said that. James

-- Anonymous, October 03, 2000

I am a wicked, greedy bitch. It's never enough.

-- Anonymous, October 04, 2000

I wish I had more money. It's not dire, but I'd like to reach a point where I could write without being under pressure to make money some other way in the rest of my time (what "rest" of my time?!?), and where we could vacation just once in a while, and where we could buy a house. Really, buying a house is my idea of total financial solvency, I guess. I want a picket fence and a garden, dammit!

Oh, it's my turn. I'm still wondering if Tracey is getting enough. I'm also worried about flossie. Real worried. Are you going to talk dirty over the phone for money, floosie? Don't.

Well, I feel content. I can pay all my bills and buy the shit we have that wears out or needs replacing. And I have enough money to give some to my grown kids and my sister when they ask. And my mother lives with us at age 78 because she's batty as hell and that's not a strain. (She has money of her own - lots - but like most old people who are turning to oatmeal between the ears, she obsesses about money. And she's always had enough.) She told me the other morning I shouldn't read in bed because it will strain(??) my eyes and it wastes electricity. (Which, of course, she doesn't pay for.) Her idea of a good use of electricity is when she dozes in front of "The Young and the Restless." She's a sweet old thing.I wonder how I'll feel when she's gone. I've never been in the world before without a mother.

I don't know if this ever happens to any of you, but do you ever put off a major purchase for a zillion years, finally buy the thing and then find out "your company is going away?" So I put off the new car thing for 13 years, did research on them for 2 years, finally got one last month (haven't even made the first payment) and found out this week that our whole division may be disolved within 26 weeks. hmmm. I am so debt adverse anyway, and drug my feet on this damn car. I'll probably be fine. I don't think I've been out of work for 15 minutes since I was 16, but doesn't that just bite? Anyway, I didn't even answer the question...money is fine right now, but the future always looms, eh? (is someone playing that Alanis song?)

-- Anonymous, October 05, 2000

At least you have half a year to find a new job. A few years ago, a week before the first payment on our new Jeep, my husband's company closed up with no notice and screwed everyone out of their last two week's pay. Oh, and this happened on January 2, so not only did we have our first car payment, we had Christmas bills coming.

-- Anonymous, October 05, 2000

Lisa D, that sucks. I just bought a new car, too, (after 13+ years) but pulled money out of my mutual fund to pay for it, because I'm concerned about my financial situation next year. Fortunately, I had the ability to do that. Since I'm planning to relocate next year, I'm terrified I won't be able to find a job, I'll run through all my savings, and I'll end up *living* in the damn car. So even though I've got enough *now*, I'm afraid for the unknown future. (Cue Alanis, again.) I'll think good thoughts about your situation.

Off-topic to Bubba: um, no, actually I'm not. "Not enough" as in "not any."

Gee, do I know how to pull a thread into the gutter or what?

-- Anonymous, October 05, 2000

Tracey: Bummer. Don't wait too long to do something about it. It's been my experience that it's easy to make a bad decision if you're tooo horny. Knowwudimeen?

-- Anonymous, October 05, 2000

We've finally got enough to barely pay our bills, but that's only because I've been busting my ass working overtime at my current job instead of studying to get a better job. It's an evil catch-22.

For the past 10 years or so I haven't cared much about money, but I've recently noticed that I've started caring about it again.

Sometimes lately I feel guilty that we (are able to) waste money on frivolous stuff. But then I figure that as long as I [HOKEYNESS ALERT!] give thanks often, it'll be okay. I mean, Paul works hard. He deserves the bad-ass jobs he's gotten recently. And I... well, I am sometimes nice to Paul. I deserve to let him spend money on me if he feels like it.
