Oh shut up you tart! We'll beat the Mackems. Nee probs.

OK OK OK. Sorry I told you to shut up. Were you there? Do you have a match report? How sis the defence play. According to the reporter on Sly, we had huge ammounts of possesion and totally controlled the game. So why didn't we score more? Was it the midfield again or di dthe sharpshoters get blunted?

Well if you won't do a report, then I suppose I'd better.

Newcastle United showed good form against Third Division Leyton Orient but could only manage a draw as they progressed to the next round of the Worthington Cup.

The O's were given a great boost on the night when Steve Watts equalised on half-time after Kevin Gallacher had given the Magpies a 32nd minute lead.

Bobby Robson's men had a host of chances and could have made the scoreline more conclusive had it not been for the heroics of Orient 'keeper Ashley Bayes.

Bayes denied Magpies' captain Alan Shearer, Kieron Dyer and Daniel Cordone after Rob Lee had rattled the woodwork in the first minute.

Gallacher's goal was enough to send a well organised Newcastle through to the next round but Orient did not cave in and battled throughout the 90 minutes.

Delight

Robson was looking for an improvement from the perforamnce by his team at the weekend when Newcastle lost by a single goal at home to Charlton.

It was former Addicks midfielder Lee who tested the Orient goal when his firm half-volley rebounded off the post and minutes later Dyer clever run and shot was well saved by Bayes.

Gallacher missed a simple chance from close range after 15 minutes made made amends later when Andy Griffin drove in a cross for the Scotland international to tap home.

Chance after chance was created by Newcastle but it was the home side who scored to their supporters' delight when Watts latched on to a ball from the right to deflect a shot past 'keeper Shay Given.

Newcastle held firm in the second half and Bayes again did brilliantly to keep out a stinging Shearer volley - but the Magpies had already done enough on the night.

There - that saved you a lot of typing Doug. Seems we played really well.

Sorry - but we were awful. We looked like we did under Ruud Gullit - loads of possession, no width or chances. There was real anger in the crowd tonight - certainly around where I was sat. Cort was a donkey. Cordone was better. Our midfield is shite and we are deluding ourselves if we think Speed and Lee are anything other than crap. Aaron Hughes is good. Dyer and Shearer by far our best players and the only ones who ultimately could give a f..k about playing for Newcastle. Play Shearer in the midfield as he has more class than the rest of our players put together and can attack, defend and probably hold a midfield. Screach -I was there and can assure you that the Makem Filthies could paste us at present.

Awe Doug, you're only saying that to put me in a good mood for Saturday. Just 'cos you're not going you don't have to spoil it all for the rest of us!

So, midfield was no better than Saturday and against inferior opposition. Onthe positive side, after Saturday, we have a long rest (16 days methinks). Barton will be back. Goma's nose should be fixed. Even Bassedas may be back by then too. Shearer will have turned up for the BBS five-a-side in Lahndaan and got his goal-scoring back on track. I might even have taught my pig to fly by then.

Aye, Dougal, awa wi' yer shite taak.

Actually, we were a little better than average, to be honest, and had nowt to beat. First half we didn't create enough, all very physical, no-one had enough time on the ball as LO were clearly up for it but didn't have the talent to go with the enthusiasm.

Second half we should have scored four or five. We either tried to take one touch too many, or just failed to connect with crosses, or, more often, their keeper made very good saves. Shearer hit a couple straight at him but he made a couple of excellent stops from Ketsb- um, Cordone.

Perfomances of note: Um...Well, Griffin got stuck in and to me was the pick at the back. The midfield had few ideas - maybe it's because we expect more of him than of Lee, Speed and Gallacher, but the biggest culprit was Dyer. Reluctant to run at people, or even, once or twice, into spaces. First half Domi seemed similarly reluctant, more from him in the second half made a difference. Though he didn't score, Shearer looked like he could net two or three a game against teams of this calibre. Very little to suggest that he could net one every two or three games against a Prem defence though. Couple of howlers from Cordone, otherwise he was a handful; Cort showed signs of an understanding with Shearer but was a bit shambolic on the ball.

If Arsenal had the same injuries as us they'd be without:

Manninger Dixon Adams Keown Luzhny Viera Pires Grimandi (every now and then aka Lee) Wiltord

Couple that with a couple of poor results and how would you expect them to be performing. I can't even think what kind of side they could produce without that lot.

Yet we expect our lads to thrash everyone, play them off the park with amazing football, out tackle them whilst still stroking the ball around and at the same time running themselves into the ground.

They're only human and the confidence must go when there are so many players out.

It's not expecting them to thrash everyone - it's expecting them to play with pride and there was precious little evidence of that. Looking at the way teams play against lower opposition in this competition, it's hardly just us who struggle.

A difficult match last night. Massive injury list and then Cort going off. How do you guage the pride? People throwing themselves into tackles and never stop running? Probably the easiest parameters to judge, yet they'd be foolish to be acting in such a way and I bet Bobby would've told them the same last night.

Different matter against a Premiership team, in a game without a previous two goal lead.

I'd expect different against Man City on Sat but I don't think we should really judge the effort of the players in the circumstances last night. we are tetering on the edge of a major injkury crisis i.e. if Shearer, Hughes and Speed were to be injured we really are in the shit.

Thing is, it was presumably that sort of thinking that made us play like poo against Southampton and Charlton.

The comic genius that is our Geordie Jew has given us a fair assessment of the game. In addition, I'd say that Shearer showed a great deal more than I'd seen of late, and was full of running. Don't think his fitness is in doubt, especially after being the meat in a crunching Orient sandwich early in the first half (excuse the journo cheese).

Cort looked uncomfortable when asked to be creative, but won a fair share of headers. Like Dan said on the night, a semblance of understanding is appearing. However, his injury may put back all our hard work. Cordone was also more proficient, but the space afforded him (and Dyer) was sinfully wasted. Reluctance to take on and beat their markers infuriated our anxious fans as we wanted to see a decent tonking.

For large parts of the game, it was defence against attack, and even Andy Griffin got stuck in to a few runs down the wing. And why not, considering no other player did. In fairness, the pitch was small, and any sprinting wing play would only have reached 3/4 pace by the time they hit the Os fans at either end.

Talking of Orient fans. Quite what they made of the cardboard off-the- back-of-a-lorry firework display is a mystery. The pall of smoke billowing in the evening air threatened for a while to sit on the uncovered home fans in the North Stand, which would have made for interesting viewing. Sadly, it may also mean the entire takings for the game literally went up in smoke!

Special mentions:

the PA announcer calling for the Os to sing like they had never done before - which must mean they sing alot normally

Keith Barrett

Two Darren Peacocks

Sing When You're Drawing

Peter Jones failing to give a single handball

Shay getting a kick in the knackers

Doog

Have you been listening to Leonard Cohen again - come on lass we're Toon fans - we always think positive.

Its better than last season - that'll do me for now - lets see where we are at Xmas and then we'll have a better idea.

-- Anonymous, September 27, 2000

Hey Josh. There's nowt wrong with Leonard Cohen - at least he doesn't come from Middlesbrough! I love some of his songs, but have to admit that he is a bit depressing at times. Mind you, I think "Famous Blue Raincoat" by Jennifer Warnes on which she sings only his songs, is tremendous.
