Goose patrol reporting from Maine

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Looked up this morning after letting the horses out and there they were: Canadian geese flying south in V formation! It was wicked chilly this morning and the weatherman is calling for possible snow. A Maine saying for ya all that I hope not to have to report too soon: "It's spittin' snow". Good day and bright blessings from central Maine!

No geese going over this part of Iowa. I always love watching them fly past, even though in the fall it means winter really is coming. Gerbil

Well, if Epona is seeing them in Maine, they should be over central NH pretty soon -- we've had the wood stove going for a couple of days, and it definitely feels like fall now. I'd better pick what's left of my cherry tomatoes and the dahlias that are for going on the piano at church.

Ayuh! Heard them this morning about zero-dark-thirty! (maybe 4 am - sunrise here in deep south Maine is after 6 now). Sounded like small flocks, maybe 10 to 15. But I do think we're on the down slope. On the positive side, we haven't had a frost yet! We are almost 2 weeks overdue, and still eating fresh tomatoes and peppers! Go - global warming! (To hell with your alarmist blatherings, Algore!) GL!

They are a'gathering here in Indiana--whole fields scattered with 'em. One of my co-workers reported frost on her windshield this morning, tho' I had none.

Upstate N.Y. they are starting to arrive .By the time deer season starts they will be in full swing .

Leann, why don't you tell those geese to fly southeast from you? We get a few flying over, but I've never seen what so many of you talk about. It must be a beautiful sight. We had ice on the windshield yesterday morning after two more inches of rain. Maybe even a little frost this morning. that about 3 weeks early.

The geese are long gone, but I got a heartmelting vision this morning. My daughter said 'Look at the geese', there was a flock of over 100 Trumpeter Swans flying over! Awesome sight. I heard they group up on a lake near here and should be 1000 by tomorrow. We're going for sure. (Birch Lake, Norma) BTW, it's snowing here, yet still too warm to accumulate. Jill

No snow thank God . I awoke to an awful load sound of a flock of geese in the corn field .I guess winter will come .Upstate N.Y.

If you see the geese in Indiana, that's pretty close to me! None down here yet, I am praying for an indian summer here. Still picking tomatoes, peppers, strawberrys and planting runners from the strawberrys. Ate a watermelon yesterday! BUT I had yellow leaves in the yard Monday! Just a few, but it's starting. Been very chilly in the mornings here, but then it warms up to 70's. We have had so much rain here, I mowed grass for 2 days and finially got done yesterday. Today I have to rake it all up and take it to the garden, but I am thankfull for the rain. Supposed to go back to 60's at night and 80's during the day! Do the geese rest for a couple of weeks anywhere before they fly again? This is so interesting.

We have had a couple of good frosts now, and the leaves are really starting to turn. Greg is going up to northern Maine to look at property either next week or the week after -- he isn't sure yet which week he's got off -- and hope it won't be too cold as he's taking Juniper and they are going to be camping in a tent!! Wish I could go, too, but my work schedule won't allow it.

I have already seen 3 flights coming into the Wheeler refuge here in N. Alabama. The flight Saturday had 18 geese in the formation.
