What was the cause of Edgar Allan Poe's Death? Did he have a sickness? His wife Virginia also became ill and died. What was wrong with her?

There was an article in Readers' Digest a while back about this doctor that investigated E.A. Poe's death and discovered that he died of rabies. Don't know about his wife, though.
