Dbas out for season

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Ronnie Gill reports that Dabizas has done his cruciate ligament and is out for eight months i.e. rest of season. Simplifies things in a way as Bobby MUST but another central defender who can push Hughes and Goma all the way for a starting place.

And NO I don't include Marcellino in any of my thoughts regarding the defence. He's shown the attitude he takes by taking weeks off with a bad finger. If the fire was in the belly he'd overcome it. Sell him back to Spain when the Spanish transfer window opens up again, I don't care how much for.

Answers

We could do with him to convert a few corners into goals.

Charvet is also not 100% fit,Steve Caldwell could well get a game tommorow.

Looks like we'll have to go out and buy that Dave CHALLINOR lad.

Steve harper will be out with a swolen knee for 2 weeks.

Have we got a forth choice keeper?

ah Yes Jonathan Brain

Marcelino's finger is worse than people realise. In fact it was so bad he almost lost it. Don't get me wrong, he's shite and we need rid of him, but he's being unfairly accused of malingering. Well, this time anyway.

If Tony Adams can turn out after pain killers to his back, Linekar can play and score with an arm in plaster, and Goma can play a game with a busted nose, then Marcelino can turn out with a bust finger.

Then again, what's the point in giving the opposition a man advantage?

Really gutted for Dabz - pity they couldn't have diagnosed this serious problem 4 weeks ago. He's not exactly Franz Beckenbauer but he's still a miss.

Who was that fella years ago who played rugby against the All Blacks with a broken arm? Bet Buff could tell us :-)

-- Anonymous, September 25, 2000

Softie, there must be hundreds of them. Oh, I think I see what you're saying. You mean he started with a broken arm, rather than sustained one playing against them. SIlly me.

-- Anonymous, September 25, 2000

Softie, you put me on the spot cos I am not into reference books but I would go for Scott Gibbs ,slight leaning to the baldy heeded all action Irishman up front, Keith ---? Pales into insignificence compared with Bert Trautman, broken neck,Rocky Marciano (13th round, Bloodied, I can see 3 of them), Brian Close no protection. peppered round the ribs by the hostile windy pace attack. If its more than a broken finger Toon are guilty of really poor pr for the fans and unfair to Marcellino. A little story on unusual injuries, played for a local junior team about 1954, the weather on the day of this particular match was the worst I have ever encountered in my life, the ref was of the old school, name of Ralph Fiennes I think, gale force wind, sub zero temp, sheeting down with not snow but ice. The one saving grace was we used to get stripped in the newly completed pit-head baths, there it was I noticed our new left wing signing, mainly cos he had new boots, a thing unheard of in those days. Anyway we kicked off, 5 minutes into the game our white shorts became transparent, (no y`s) showing all our hydraulics, ten minutes into the game the ball wenbt out of play on the wide left, Robbie our new left winger walked stiffly to collect it for a throw in. With his arms aloft, ball at the ready he prepared for movement. Buff ran across screaming "Give Give", the ball never did arrive, skidding to a halt in front of him I could see he was gone. I punched the ball out of his grasp, his arms never moved, our trainer took him off as we all watched with envious eyes as he left the field of play disapearing over the crest of the pit heap. arms still above his head, I kid you not. Amundsen played another 5 mins before calling the whole farce off and we rushed for the showers and yes he was still there under a hot shower arms in the upright position Probably the only player to be took off with rigor mortis in his playing parts, sad postcript he went on to play a trial for the toon Buff a fund of useless information

Nice one Buff. You're "Scott" free.

I pretty sure that Marcellino's injury was a snapped finger tendon. This is miles worse than a bent finger nail! It will effect the whole arm. I'm sure bobby wouldn't let him malinger.

The Journal this reports Dabz saying he expects to be back within 5 months, ie, by end Feb.
He may go to the US for the operation, but is reported as being relieved the wait is finally over.
The paper reports that Dabz has become increasingly frustrated at United's decision to delay an operation, and feels he could have been well on his way to recovery by now (my sentiments precisely!). He is quoted "Of course the injury is much worse than it originally appeared, but it won't keep me out for the season". He's a good bloke, Dabz.
Something just does not seem right with the medical support/advice to the Toon - a feeling I've had for some time, in fact since Harmoan decided to bugger off back to Germany to get his own knee injury treated, which always struck me as curious.

I think arrangements in this country are basically poor - Owen, Redknapp et al have all gone abroad for treatment. I don't think it's just us. Cruciates can be very difficult to pick up on. Big Al played on his for about 6 weeks before sneaking off to get an expert in Cambridge to find out what the problem was - Blackburn hadn't a clue and fined him for going behind their backs....

There are two schools of thought on cruciate injury. The american way is to dive in there ASAP and fix it. The other way is to wait until the swelling goes down and then assess at that stage. Often this can take upto 2-3 weeks.

My surgeon reassured me that the waiting was in his view best so that the full combination of MRI scan, manipulation, X-ray (in case of bone fragments).

Most cruciates are repaired by using about 1/3 of the patella tendon (the one that you hit to get the knee-jerk reaction), along with a bit of bone attached to either end. Bearing in mind that with this sort of injury the whole knee swells up like the biggest purplest pudding you've ever seen, this also affects the patella tendon.

In the scheme of recovery for cruciates, there doesn't appear to be any conclusive evidence that immediate intervention is better than waiting.

At least when you wait, you have proper chance for assessment; sometimes the cruciate stretches too far, and the symptoms are similar to a rupture, but absolute rest can cure it.

Thanks for that buff, sounds like something from a Spike Milligan book :-)

The coldest day I've experienced was on top of some scaffolding fitting weatherboard on the gable of a barn. We had 2 pieces to go and it was about 3 minutes to bait time. It was so painfully cold up there in the wind that Pete and I decided to lash the last bits on before break but needed to get a shift on if we were to get a seat in the site hut. Consequently, corners were cut and young Softie decided to save time by feathering off a bit of this board where we were scribing it in to fit along the timbers with my Stanley knife.

Everyone knows you always use a knife away from you, but it was an emergency (you try standing in a site hut with a gas heater on, 20 blokes smoking and farting and you'll know what asphyxiation is all about!) so we were treated to that horrible meaty 'thunk' as the knife slipped free and found its way inside the joint of my thumb. Despite the numbing cold (far worse than Kingston Park) I had that awaful shock and nausea of a piece of metal entering my body and kept my eyes glued to Pete's who pursed his lips into an 'O' and inspected the damage.

Nice deep, slice with a filthy blade and all the internals of the jont open to the sky. Then the simple task of climbing down 3 storeys with one arm in the air, the fingers blue with cold and the thumb seemingly alight. Absolutely horrible...they made me wrap it up before giving me a lift to casulalty and asked to dip sarnies in it and all the usual sympathy you expect in all-male environments.

The whole thing was put in perspective, however, when I was sitting in casualty at the Queen Vic in East Grinstead with a blob of anti-sceptic gel on the wound and a chopper landed with a little boy who had had his arm pulled off by a chimpanzee.

Hmmm. I think we can call that a digression :-)

Hmmm - thanx for that Softie. At lunchtime too.

Excuse me (exits stage right, in a hurry.........)

Can't believe this about Dabs. It seemed like a minor thing and now we lose him for 5-8 months. So soon after signing a new contract too and never really having any injury problems.

-- Anonymous, September 26, 2000

Re Marcellino. I saw him outside the ground on the day of the Spurs game. He had his hand and arm all strapped up and what looked like a light cast on it. He then had the whole lot strapped in an elevation sling across his chest. He looked thoroughly pi**ed off. I know this was a month ago but it did look like something pretty nasty from the outside.

Thanks for that medical insight Dunx - very interesting post.

-- Anonymous, September 26, 2000

Dunx -

Are you Dr Bill in disguise, Are you Dr Bill in Disguise......etc :o)

-- Anonymous, September 26, 2000

Clarky, Gus

Nope, not Dr Bill, just spectacularly well-informed on cruciate and lateral/colateral complex ligament injuries; I did a Casiraghi a couple of years ago, and had 5 months in plaster which gave me plenty of time to read up on all the gory details....all which point to poor old Dunx not playing any competitive sport ever again, at the ripe old age of 27.

Boo-hoo.

Aye Softie. Reports I heard said the mad chimp actually escaped - and was last seen heading for S/land.

So what was this thread about again ?
