Hackers Try to Sabotage Russia-U.S. Emergency Exercises

MOSCOW, Sep 21, 2000 -- (Agence France Presse) Computer hackers have tried to sabotage joint US-Russian exercises aimed at tackling major natural disasters, the Russian ministry of emergency situations said Thursday, quoted by the ITAR-TASS news agency.

Hackers based in the United States tried to break into the Russian ministry's database programs but were blocked immediately by information technology experts.

The exercises, designed to develop ways of cooperating and sharing information during simulations of an earthquake and an oil slick, are being held simultaneously in Moscow, Russia's Far East and Hawaii.

The database was fully operational again Thursday and the exercises were continuing. ((c) 2000 Agence France Presse)
