Wednesday, September 20, 2000 Truckers threaten to park protest

By Andrew Seymour, Ottawa Sun Ottawa truckers are threatening to wreak havoc on area road construction by parking their rigs and refusing to haul gravel.

"If we stay out long enough they won't get construction jobs done this year," said Dwayne Mosley, general manager of the Greater Ottawa Truckers Association yesterday.

Mosley expects 150 members to meet at the Centurion Centre at 170 Colonnade Rd. tonight at 7:30 to decide how truckers will protest soaring fuel prices. One plan is to quit hauling to road construction sites.

"It could mean roads stay ripped up this year," said Mosley. "We've got no choice. We can't pay."

Mosley said truckers are paying as much as $1,000 a month in additional fuel costs.

Doug Brousseau, deputy commissioner of transportation for the region, said higher fuel costs are hitting everyone hard. "I can sympathize with the truckers but I don't think trying to stop public works is the way to do it."
