Comfortably!
My guess is 35,000, and I'll wager now that we will attract more than the mackems and the smoggies put together.

I found it hard to believe that only 5,000 smoggies turned up last nihgt. That really does speak volumes about the support of the club. You would expect at the very least about 15,000 core supporters.

I suspect it says more about their dissatisfaction with the present manager.

And what about 2,800 at Derby?

Sunderland 25,000 was really poor cosidering the prices. If those prices had been at St James' it would have easily sold out.

I actually find all of this really encoraging, it'll I see a sense of normality coming back into the game. I see one of the main reasons for the incredible hike in transfer fees being the medium sized clubs investing huge amounts to try and get into Europe and the big money. But a lot of them just don't have the basis to sustain this. Eventually things will revert to the clubs with a large supporter base/turnover and the odd clubs that usually on a cyclical basis manage to get a really good team together to compete with them. In the last 3-4 years the latter have tried to take short cuts. I think it'll also be good for the national side, because I'm sure we'd see some home-grown talent developing more.

It's all well and good writing off the fans of other Clubs as disloyal; however, I think these attendances also say something about a competition that the PL Clubs don't value any longer, even though it is perhaps the easiest qualification route for the UEFA Cup. This view has obviously rubbed off on the fans.
In addition, the fans are forking out so much now to watch PL games that many just don't have the brass to go to Worthless Cup games - especially when playing against teams from the lower leagues minimises the incentive.
The two-legged nature of these ties also means that no result is forthcoming from the first leg - another disincentive to shelling out decent bucks.
The two-legged ties should be killed immediately, and IMO the PL Clubs should drop out of the competition altogether. The associated reduction in games played would be preferable to reducing the number of Clubs competing in the PL.
