Your Motto

Basically, I'm talking about what quote, saying, anthem, whatever best, or closely approximates your life philosophy? One of the best things I ever heard was a quote and I can't even remember who said it, but what he/she said was:

"I don't care how old I am when I die, as long as people say 'She died Young'."

that just seemed to me to sum up all my goals for my own life. So, what's yours?

Never expect anything, and you'll never be disappointed.

Gah, I'm so cheerful.

I have two favorites:
"This will pass away." - a form of "this too shall pass away", from the Bible, only the version I like is from 10,000 Maniacs. Not that far apart, are they? This "motto" gets me through whenever things aren't going my way.
"I will if I want to" - Bo Jackson, in a baseball game. The story goes that he had just stolen third base and was told by the baseman "you won't steal home", to which Bo replied "I will if I want to". He stole home on the next pitch. This motto gives me a lot of strength.

My favorite quote is from a Smiths' song: "It's so easy to laugh, it's so easy to hate, it takes strength to be gentle and kind." It's something for me to aspire to.

I like "it's fun to be fooled but it's better to know". It's my sister's, though.

My motto by default is "What does not kill you makes you stronger." Said by a philosopher, German I believe. I'm pretty darn tough. The other day a wise women told me, "Make mole hills out of mole hills." I love that twist.

"Today is whatever I want it to be," from a Beth Orton song. Yeah, I'd *like* to really live by that...

"You're not the boss of me."

I'm sure I have a more intellectual one in my brain somewhere, but this one dominates my thoughts while at work.

i'm so jaded and cynical and bitter, most days my motto is "people are stupid." my dad passed along two good bits of wisdom: "nobody's perfect," and "talk is cheap."

see? really really jaded.

Lately I'm attached to "Excuse me for living."

-- Anonymous, September 19, 2000

I guess I also like the "doesn't kill us, makes us stronger" one.

"Eat right. Exercise. Die anyway."

"It is better to look good than to feel good."

No, I'm kidding. While I can be very sarcastic, snide, biting, bitchy, ect... I like I live by the unoriginal but true "Mean people suck.". Cause...they do?

Because I said so, that's why!

-- Anonymous, September 19, 2000

I've been saying this for years now...GRavity is optional! Okay, not literally, but in other words, you dont have to be pulled down, y'know?

I've got two. The first one was said by John Wayne in the shootist. It's too long for here so just watch it. The second I try to live by: The greatest thing in life to be learned, Is to love and be loved, in return. There's more to it but I don't know it. James

While my son is young:

"If you bungle raising your children, I don't think whatever else you do well matters very much." -Jacqueline Kennedy Onassais

Overall life view:

"It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees." -Delores Ibarruri

I firmly believe in the adage "it takes a village to raise a child". My mom has a wall hanging that says that, it's hung in her home all my life. I hate hate hate that it's been so overplayed and turned into controversy. So that's not my motto.

Mine is "baby I'm a star". It's from "Baby I'm A Star" by Prince, off the "Purple Rain" album/movie.

it's a tossup between:

Everything goes how it's supposed to

and

I hate everyone.

Two mottos get me through the days. 1) Do not wear anything that scares the cat. 2) Honour is not optional. Do the right thing.

-- Anonymous, September 20, 2000

Don, that's a good way to put the obligation to honour.

I just remembered another one - I like mine about heroism (which means something specific to me, and not just pulling people from burning buildings and whatnot), but this one is definitely more applicable to life: The moving finger writes and, having writ, moves on: not all your piety and wit can lure it back to cancel half a line, nor all your tears wash out a word of it. I try my best to remember this: that what's done is done and there's no point in beating yourself up over what is past. The best you can do is accept it, deal with it, move on, and (here's the catch) try to learn from it.

After spending countless hours reading these forums, I decided to actually contribute a thought.. My motto would have to be "Love it or leave it"..I find this to be extremely effective in my highly exciting life :)
