WHITTON ISSUES LUA-LUA ULTIMATUM by Alex Livie

COLCHESTER UNITED have issued an ultimatum to Newcastle, telling The Magpies that they have to sign Tresor Lomano Lua-Lua on Monday, or the deal is off - while Rangers are rumoured to be waiting in the wings to snap up the Zaire-born forward. The clubs have been locked in talks for the past week but it appeared that they had reached an impasse over the weekend, with the exact terms of the financial package being the stumbling block.

Despite the reported problems, news of an impending transfer was fuelled over the weekend, when U's boss Steve Whitton left the fleet-footed forward out of the squad to face Wrexham.

Whitton would not be drawn on why Lua-Lua missed the 1-1 draw, saying: "I left him out for a number of reasons I'm not prepared to go into.

"At the moment, Lomano is on the coach for Tuesday's Worthington Cup trip to Sheffield United. If Newcastle don't sign him today (Monday) the boy will be in my side at Bramall Lane."

Issuing a stark warning to Magpies boss Bobby Robson, Whitton said: "The deal has to be done today."

If Robson fails to secure the transfer, it is being reported that Gers boss Dick Advocaat may step in, in a scenario remarkably similar to the one that saw Peter Lovenkrands move to Ibrox, when he appeared all set to sign for the St James' Park outfit.

Newcastle must have made a final bid that was still not quite enough for Colchester, It's unlikely that the stuburn NUFC board will give in and up the offer, I think the deal will be off.
