Tourney 5 - Games we're playing and settings

greenspun.com : LUSENET : MAME Action Replay : One Thread

OK - here we go. I'd like to thank the editors for their help in this matter. Anything in CAPS is a change in the settings. Anything with a * means the settings were changed.

1. Renegade(bootleg) - Normal difficulty - 1 life - Extra at 30K

* 2. Tempest - 5 LIVES - NO EXTRAS - Medium1 difficulty

* 3. Moon Patrol - 5 LIVES - NO EXTRAS

* 4. WindJammers - Level 4 - 60 SECOND TIME LIMIT - this is temporary so far - but I'm putting 60 instead of 30 because there's a time bonus for reaching 12 points early - which will make the game a little more competitive I think.

* 5. Metal Slug - 3 lives - 60 second play time - LEVEL 6

* 6. Elevator Action(bootleg) - NORMAL DIFFICULTY, 3 lives, extra at 10 K

* 7. The Pit - Fast speed - SHORT TIME LIMIT - 3 lives

8. Vulgus - 3 lives - 20K & 60K for bonus lives.

The following games were voted out for certain reasons:

New Rally X - because of Rally X being in T4

Meikyu Jima - Not a MAME 35 game

Freeze - Because of Elevator Action being a duplicate

Kangaroo - I think because of EA + a big points leeching problem

The renegade we'll be playing is the kunikub clone cause that's the only one that works.

Thanks to JSW for pointing this out. GB9

can i suggest to add to the list "BLOOD ON" in malug ? :)

-- Giovanni (tharon@tiscalinet.it), September 18, 2000.

Question: since we will have to go into the soft dips on each recording to raise the difficulty on Metal Slug, will turning blood on be allowed? It has no effect on difficulty, doesn't make the game easier or harder... just looks better than seeing sweat come out of the enemies. Should be an optional choice of course...

ok ... it looks fun ; just 2 questions : 10) will the "60 seconds" wjammers'inputs be valable for regular marp? 20) aren't mpatrol and mslug too similar (games with a tank firing and jumping) ?

-- phil (plamat@club-internet.fr), September 18, 2000.

Phil, have you ever played mslug or mpatrol ? :)

the gameplay is totally different, mslug is like a "platform shooter", mpatrol is basically....er, difficult to say, it's a sort of "jumping shooter" :) the only things the two games have in common are the presence of a fire button and a jump button.....stop

Looks great to me. And no, Moon Patrol and Metal Slug aren't too much alike...

Whoa!! Five shooters isn't that kinda of too many. Elevator Action and Metal Slug are both platform shooters. So, I believe that EA should be removed for the reason.

In regards to Kangaroo and EA the only thing they have their both platform games. One being a shooter and the other as a beat em up.

Giovanni , I do know the 2 games , and I know there is a big difference between the graphics of the 2 games (and also in the sizes of the roms !) ; I was just noticing a similitude in the 1st round of mslug on the PRINCIPLE to be in a tank which can jump and fire in the same time ... but mslug sounds fun to me (even if it doesn't sound very "pacifist")

Gameboy : I had a problem with settings on wjammers ("60 seconds options") and mslug("level 6") : I don't find them in my dipswitch menu ... I hope there is nothing more difficult to change (remember we had some problems in the beginning of t3 with gauntlet2) ; can you explain us how to do ? or maybe we could let wjammers to "30 seconds" so that we have one of the 8 with a short time to play a game

thanks

PS : are mpatrol t5 settings the same than tg settings ?

Sure thing Phil. There's a service mode in WindJammers - set the soft dip I think it's called - you'll find the adjustable settings there.

Hope this answers your inquiry. GB9

Quick question regarding Windjammers settings. I'm happy with the 60 seconds per set, but am wondering about the difficulty of it at the default of level 4. I think it has been mentioned before, but at level 4 it would get difficult fairly quickly. I personally have difficulty getting past round 2 as it starts getting incredibly infuriating (as infuriating as Telstra's pathetic attempt at an EFNet server). Level 1 or 2 may be a better solution, as it still gets difficult around round 4, and I'm sure we don't want another repeat of Rally X, do we?

ok Gameboy : I partially found the hidden dipswitch (I had quite never used the F2 touch before) but still don't manage to memorize it : I have to hit F2 each time I play a game ; I hope there is a way to avoid that , because it would be boring changing the "soft dip" each time we start a new game

Can you help me again , please ?

Regarding soft dip settings in Neo-Geo games:

Push F2 to bring up the test menu. Scroll down to "Setting up the Soft Dip". Push A. Another menu appears, scroll down from "Setting up the Cabinet" to "Slot1 [game name]". Push A again. Change whatever settings need to be changed, A and B cycle through the available choices on each setting. When finished, the C button will take you back, so push it twice to return to the original test menu. Scroll down to Exit and push A again.

Yeah, this'll get annoying, especially in the case of Windjammers where we'll have to push A quite a bit just to change the timer from 30 to 60 on EVERY SINGLE GAME.

I believe the settings are put in the CFG file. If you don't move the CFG file to a TMP file when you start a recording - you should be able to start with lv 4, 60 seconds. Doesn't MAME place the CFG into the INP anyway? Doing this is quite legal. Just change it to level 4, 60 seconds - leave mame to save the cfg, reenter mame w/o moving the cfg to somewhere else, and you'll be fine.

Just a note about t5-mpatrol,

If no one has any objections, I believe the settings should be 5 men + 1 extra at 10,000... to conform to settings in which inps have been submitted in regular Marp

-- Zylquin (zylquin@hotmail.com), September 21, 2000.

No, Neo-Geo games do not save the soft dip settings to the .CFG file... only the hard dips and the data containing country code and whether it's arcade or console mode are saved. The actual game settings are stored in the .HI file (and from m36b14 on they're stored in NVRAM). Since m35tg3 will ignore the .HI file, that means settings revert to default and game adjustments will have to be made in test mode every time.

-- BBH (lordbbh@aol.com), September 21, 2000.

The moon patrol settings should include an extra man at 10K. This indeed is TGTS. Most people reach this score, so it's really like having six buggies.

-- Pat (laffaye@ibm.net), September 22, 2000.

Yes that's what I was fearing for neogeo games : soft dip are not saved ; I won't pronounce myself on mslug (I don't know the game enough) , but I think changing settings for wjammers is a lot of complications (the counter to change seconds from 30 to 60 must is progressing 1 second by 1 second) and a big lost of time at the beginning of each game ; it would be more deserving winning the "12 points bonus" (about 2000 pts) in 30 seconds , and all input could be counted for regular marp (and tg ?) with the default settings

I hope you will change your advice , Gameboy , considering this new things

Regards phil

... looks that way doesn't it? fine. 30 seconds it is. GB9

Oh yeah... blood is allowed in metal slug.
