The members of DALLAS YEAR 2000 PREP have decided there will be NO Super Bowl 2000 for ANYONE until ALL the Computers in the World are Year 2000 Compliant. HOWEVER, a special waver will be granted to any Company which reports to the Dallas Year 2000 Group that they have worked hard and every last Computer and Program they have is Compliant. There was some discussion as to whether it would be sufficient and necessary that those Companies also insure that their Vendors and Customers were also compliant. This will be taken up on a case by case basis.

THEREFORE, it would be better to assume that there will be NO Super Bowl 2000 for YOU unless ALL Computers are Year 2000 Compliant. This is one Y 2 K "EFFECT" not noted in any other study.

We trust that now YOU will understand HOW VERY SERIOUS Y2K IS !!!

I repeat: there is no GLOBAL FIX and...there are zillions of problems. Zillions is a technical term of a Matrix of millions of application programs multiplied by a matrix of millions of users (Note: its really a TENSOR but lets not get that technical). The Ultimate Night Mare of the I.T./I.S. Pros came true....'TheUSERS GOT LOOSE".
Unlike the "Big Guys" the Little players don''t know yet. AND.. worse, their problem will be more costly and possibly not fixable. WHY?? Simple. The Big Guys Problems are really analogous to that of a Boeing or Lockheed Jet craft user problem. The Airlines have internal experts, external consultants, Manufacturer's consultants and expertise. More Brains and Bodies can be hired. At the other end of the spectrum, there are the car owners of the PCs with many Makes and Models all "customized" for the users, with many different kinds of driving styles and paint jobs. The Computer is the 'Universal Machine'. Give it a problem and a way to do something and it will work on it. It is "silly putty" for brains. Soon it will "replicate" and truly make us humble as it does winning at Chess. But...in the PC world you have all these machines and all these programs but NO FACTORY TRAINED MECHANICS Certified for Year 2000. There are NO University Courses in Year 2000 and prior experience is not on the job discription. It never happened before. What's a toy maker or a chain of dry cleaners to do???

As much as we'd all probably like to think we do, the "messenger" is never completely divorced from the "message." cpr made good points, once you extracted them from the ranting and raving and obscenities. But who wanted to wade through all the bullshit and name-calling?

We were not stylishly perfect, never said we were. In fact much of the behavior was and is intentional.
We were outnumbered 1,000's to one in the actual debate.
We had heavyweight foes like the US Senate and Presidential Czars, to name but two of thousands we had to debunk and translate for the sheeple. Entities who thought it responsible policy to spew outright baloney. To spend your tax dollars over a pile of do-do.
We had zero financial stake in any of this.
We faced probably the strongest historic memetic entity there is, a Millennium Contagion. You may doubt the subject, but you have never been the cycle like many of us had with this meme.
Many of us received death-threats regurlarly.
All of us had to contend with most who had no clue, but thought they had some god-given right to debate us as if they did. This continues to this day, BTW.
I personally NEVER recommended it was a good idea to spam doomer webboards. Truth is I posted but twice to TB2000 myself. One was all that was needed if one really wanted to Get-It. Yes I did openly call for TB2000 to be removed off of taxpayer supported MIT infrastructure. I did not call for it to be squashed, simply moved is all.
Most of us never wanted to be Poster Boys, we just thought it important that Freedom and sanity among fellow citizens important to our lives and those we care about.

AND STILL THE FUD continued. SO YOU KNOW WHAT ANY SENSIBLE PERSON DOES IN SUCH A CIRCUMSTANCE?? YOU SAY TO THE PROPROPONENTS OF SUCH **MALARKY** YOU ARE "FULL OF IT"". THAT WAS WHAT THE **DEBUNKERS** both ON AND OFF THE NET........DID.

NOR did anyone except the FUD PUSHERS challenge MITCH RATCLIFFE.

I never had the slightest interest in what the PUBLIC "thought" about Y2k. Gary North and Yourdon were BS Artists as far as I was concerned and Hyatt and others of his ilk were not to be paid the slightest attention. I cared ONLY what their efforts could and were doing to business and government. By 1999, it was obvious that the "Y2k Doomers and Pessimists" were themselves as much of a problem as the ACTUAL COMPUTER PROBLEMS. And because of the Internet, we had all misjudged the amount of power they had to lever their few numbers around. By mid-1999, every major business had as part of their "contingency plans" some sort of PR effort TO GET THE WORD OUT THAT "EVERYTHING WAS GOING TO BE OK". AND THAT WAS REJECTED BY THE FREAKING DOOMER "LEADERS" AS SPIN.

That left one obvious course: get the facts OUT into the Public and Press' hands where it could do some good. After that, the Public could decide......AND THE PUBLIC DID DECIDE: IT ***YAWNED***.

Now, in the aftermath of 1/1/2000 and having a full six months what do we see?

An effort to "rationalize" NON-PRUDENT STANCES INDUCED BY **PROPAGANDA** and HYPE. AND........lack of ANY SUBSTANTIAL PROBLEMS (known as "show stopppers") that would even justify my 1998 rating of 8.0.

It was never and is still not my intention to "convert" one single Doomer. I do not ever deal in "hopeless cases". What I did and other de-bunkers did was lay out the evidence for the fact that Y2k was a controllable and managable problem. That was my postion and as more and more evidence came in, I MODIFIED FROM 8.0 DOWN. I was not alone. Mike Maynard and Alan Simpson did also. De Jager was the token Target Practice for the Doomzies.

I wanted to leave a record that FUD as advocated by North, Yourdon, Kappelman, Howard Rubin and the rest of the Y2k BULL SHITTERS was in FACT: bull shit. And you may be sure that I was not alone and that many behind the closed doors in Corporate Land and in DC and the State and Local Governments viewd the PESSIMISTS AND DOOMERS AS ***PESTS****.

BUT, In Oct. 1998, Chris Anderson had noted that "the heavy work of Y2k was over". For most of the techies and upper Mgt. on the Lists and forums that dealt with LEGITIMATE ISSUES instead of the FUD that EY and North were promoting, that was OBVIOUS

. In fact it was Pauli who himself dug up the Y2k statements in Telecomm especially AT&Ts. Since we knew that IBM also was heading to completion we knew that most of what Anderson had stated was verifiable. In addition, posters from various industry or government segments were confirming this.

Meanwhile, by Nov-Dec. 1998, the FUD stories in the media were absurd. In retrospect, that was the peak of the FUD. And those who follow such things in business know that "the public is always the last to know".

Shortages and unemployment in the U.S. are two of the kinds of problems that could have lasted for more than three days if foreign countries had been hit hard by Y2k. Many countries were said to be 12 to 18 months behind the United States in fixing Y2k.
