Well I'm sort of pleased that my view from the by now customary 45 seconds on MOTD wasn't misleading. Indeed it confirmed that word of our new-found defensive solidity has been grossly exaggerated.

This is same phenomena that we have seen repeatedly over the last few seasons, wherein we are entirely incapable of maintaining a good standard of performance.
In truth BR endorsed this when he admitted that before the Coventry game he had implored the players to treat the game as though they needed to win it to win the PL Championship on the last day of the season.
For some reason this group of players are incapable of sustaining their motivation over any extended period - a fact that is extremely worrying.

I wish you'd learn to let out your emotions Ken, this holding back can't be good for you! :o))

Has anyone else noticed that the webcast has a delay built into it. I spotted it last week when the TV went over to show the lads walking off the pitch at the end of the game while I was still listening to the commentary. Well yesterday me and Screach were watching TV when they went over to the Dell to report on us going 2 down when the webcast commentary had us playing hard at 1 - 0. A couple of minutes later they scored. Now that was really annoying!

I suppose those living in Newcastle probably listen to the broadcast on the radio, rather than the webcast , and it probably makes no difference if you live abroad unless you can get Sky TV. For us in the rest of England I recommend turning the TV off!

Yes Pilgrim!! I was listening to the webcast in Seattle and at the same time following along on Rik's new chat board at his site. The second goal was announced on the damn website before I heard it on the webcast! I use RealPlayer Basic - which is the requirement for the webcast and it uses a buffer of some where around 8 seconds, i.e., that is in your own machine, and this smooths out most of the interruptions in data transfer between the source and the machine. But there must be a further delay, I guess of the same type, between the ground, e.g., Southampton, and wherever the webcast in initiated. Perhaps ITK/Rik or one of our other IT wizzards can enlighten us -- at least when they have recovered from yesterday's dismal performance.

OK, pretty pisspoor all round, I reckon.

A game of two halves and no mistake.

First five minutes was all Southampton, Domi struggled to make any sort of impression defensively and was beaten to virtually every ball in the air. Goma and Hughes showed little understanding of what makes a good centre half pairing, but occasional good touches and individual efforts save them from Worst MOTM award. At right back Charvet was good for the 1st half, and was on for NUFC MOTM, but again faded badly after the goals went in. Domi made one or two good forward runs, including an excellent piece of 'jinky' close control but was eventually crowded out.

Midfield was outplayed quite comprehensively. Speed was back to his Dalgliesh worst, Nobby bottled several challenges and Dyer was anonymous for large parts of the game. Gallacher tried to run all game, and his substitution was probably more 'cos he was knackered than any tactical reasons. Ameobi showed effort, and gave us some much needed height 'cos Al wasn't winning anything at all in the air. However young Shola has plenty to learn. At 17 you can't really fault him for much. It was the senior professionals throughout that we needed to look to and they failed to answer the call.

Going back to Shearer. He was...average. The famous aerial prowess was nowhere to be seen. His free kick specialism had wayned significally. With no midfield to speak of Al resorted to a familiar role...collecting the ball from defence and spreading play, however this was a laboured process as Soton pressurised back players quickly and played a spoiling game. If ever Rob Lee was needed.

Finally Cordone. Ketsbaia anyone? Except he soon gave up the chase, much to my vociferous displeasure, and looked lost.

This said, we were good for a first half draw and even began to bring some top drawer saves from the Saints' 'keeper. However, heads soon went down after the break with ther 47min strike and it was same old etc etc et-f'in cetera. Special mention to the ref, flagged as being something of a card-waving fanatic. He was mediocre too, with the usual spread of random decision making. Extra special mention to the linesman on our near side who completely failed to spot a Soton player slap the ball with his hand, despite being as close to the incident as you are from your PC now.

Our fans were quiet for the most part too, with, no doubt, a sense of defeatism as we fell to year 28 of our dreadful run at The Dell. Best moments were the girly ooooooo's at the Soton fans' swearing. Worst moment, realising that this was not going to be any different from last year, or the year before, or the year before that or...

so, we wern't very good then?

Oh well another year of pain, and thats just my head after a day and night drinking to forget a very poor performance.

Shay had a great game but I blamed him for the first goal. You cannot have a ball bounce across the six yard box and watch as Pahars hits it past you. Just another example of his failure to control his area. The man is a fine shot stopper but will not take charge of his area.

Charvet was motm in my opinion. He distributes the ball better than barton, he is calmer in defence than Barton and gets forward faster and to more effect. controversial on here I know but the lad is better than Barton will ever be.

Domi was taking time to find his feet after a spell out through injury. ooohhh all right he was rubbish.

Goma had a great game and is the answer to our CB problem

Hughes was patchy and looked nervous when faced with any heading responsibilities.

Solano was our next best player. His control was superb his passing incisive. His crosses were dangerous, the fact that Shearer never got on the end of one of them was symptomatic of the fact that AS had a howler. As other contributors have said he did bottle some challenges but what dy you guys want. He is not there to defend heis there to get us goals. He almost scored himself and provided all our chances. As for dropping him, well....

Dyer was awful. He made fewer tackles than Nobby. He gave the ball away continually and could not fight his way out of a paper bag let alone a very combative midfield area. there was not one creative idea in his head and he lost any appetite for the game as soon as he walked out. Passsenger.

Speed fought hard all day for the cause but was very wayward in his passing.

Cordone. Passenger and the resmblance to Kets in a wig was particularly worrying.

Gallagher. Well if running about like a headless chicken chasing the ball is a pre requisite for a footballer the let's go the whole hog and buy a headless chichken. Passenger who ran a bit.

Shearer. Don't get me started. Immobile, didn't win anything in the air worth winning, distribution was marvellous in our own half, seemed to me at times to be hiding.

Ever wondered why we seem to have no spirit when we lose a goal, well because we have no leaders, no men who will stand up and be counted, spur the team on. AS and GS should be doing this and AS was not bothered.

Toon Army pathetic. No cheering, little singing, no support in general. Outsung by a bus stop full of Soton fans ptuh.

Oh and I think it was Bobby who mentioned it but if that bunch of over paid millionaires walk off the pitch with their heads down and do not come and applaud the away fans who have sheeled out their hard cash to pay their wages, it makes you wonder why you bother. Shameful.

All in all just another day out at Soton. Great fun as always but same old rubbish on the pitch.

Thirteenth again

Sorry Dougal, but I'm really getting worried. This is the 2nd upbeat posting you've made in the last 5 days. Get well soon pet.

Well, in fairness, we don't have to go to Selhurst Park this season... further reason for optimism. My take on the game, for what it is worth, is that we didn't have a blinder, and in fact played quite poorly, but our response is exaggerated by the fact that it's Southampton. The thing is, Southampton have a canny enough first 11, they are just crap the second they get an injury. The other thing i,s we'll no doubt stuff them 5-0 when they come to wor gaff.
