Does anyone have information on how many data centers are being built around the country?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : N4E : One Thread

We are creating a database of data centers being built around the country. We are interested in square footage (with clear definitions of what is being included), planned date of completion, location, power densities (measured & maximum allowed), % of space that is colocation vs % that is leased, maximum data throughput, and any other parameters that would be helpful in understanding energy use in these facilities.

Please post replies on the forum.

thanks Jon

A recent article on this topic was in interactive week: http://www.zdnet.com/intweek/stories/news/0,4164,2624125,00.html It has a number of interesting items. The print version has a nice table that shows square footage of web hosting facilities for 5 major hosting companies projected to Dec. 2001. An interesting result of those data is that about 1/3 of the floor space is not devoted to web hosting at all, but has other uses, which emphasizes the importance of consistent accounting for the floor area.

This article also highlights some of the uncertainties in determining what the actual numbers for floor area will be.
