CA: Sewage spews into capital river

County health officials have
closed beaches on the American
River in much of Sacramento
after learning that a construction
snafu caused up to 4 million
gallons of raw sewage to gush
into the river over the weekend, a
mishap that went undetected for
days.

. . .

Last week's spill is one of three
since January that have fouled the
American River, a regional magnet for
recreation where thousands of people
fish, swim and boat on almost any
weekend day.

. . .

"What a day," said a winded Brenner of
the city utilities department. "This is
National Poop Week in Sacramento."
