as far as i have been able to understand the red death is actually tuberculosis the terrible disease that took Poe's mother and his wife later i do believe and it is symbolism this may not help but i tried

Hi! My 12th grade english class is studying this story for at least the 5th time in our high school careers. As far as I know (from what I have been told), the Red Death was based on the Black Death, or the Black Plague. The Black Death swept across Europe in the later middle ages, with out breaks in or between: 1347-1352 (1/2 to 1/3 of europe died in this). There were three types of this plague, the Bubonic, Pneumonic, and the septicemic type. That is all I have time to write at the moment, I will write more later on if possible.
