It's Getting Too Quiet Again

And I could post some more post-postmodern blurry street shots. On the other hand, I can post this.

Woman, Boyfriend, Cross. Copyright 2000 Jeff Spirer

So I was walking down Hayes Street in San Francisco and saw them in a record store, waited for them to come out, and asked them to hang around so I could take some photos. On the third or fourth shot, I noticed the cross...

Oh yeah, in case Tom is reading, the technical information is pretty much the same as I usually make up :-)

html makes me crazy. I never knew that capitalizing a center tag would not work.

Oh wait, I centered it but forget the break tag. Yucko.

I know what you mean. I don't hate HTML, but I hate myself trying to practice HTML, especially since they're ain't no goin' back once you press that submit button. Damn computers.

Nice pic. You have a lot of gusto that I wish I had. Lately I've decided that I just can no longer "sneak" the really good street photography. I need to make some sort of arrangement, meeting, agreement, or something. Up here it's maybe offer a buck to all the drunks (Alaska has the highest per capita alcoholism in the country.) Short of that, the drunks just think I'm from Hollywood (because I have a camera?) and they don't like to be photographed, but instead ask for $.50 to catch a bus or buy a drink.

i like it. damn good job of lifting an otherwise mundane shot to a reasonable level of interest; also a fine job on a pretty tough exposure.

This shows what I like best about this woman's generation... a radical, hard facade (to us outsiders), an open and friendly attitude toward individuals with a cynical attitude toward the world at large. I've often descibed myself as a cynical humanitarian, which seems to sum up these 20 somethings as well as any generality might...

I'd love to get these two in my studio... t

tri-x Jeff? sorry about that outburst, stange moods come upon me...

-- tom meyer (twm@mindspring.com), September 11, 2000.

What outburst Tom? And yes, it is Tri-X, and, as in most of the photos I shoot in 35mm, a 35mm lens.

The woman told me she has done a bit of modeling, but I don't know if she'd take a trip out just for your studio. Shooting them together was tricky - I've never shot someone in a wheelchair together with someone standing. The shots that had both of them directly were slightly awkward and only the reflection created an interesting juxtaposition.

"Cynical humanitarian", hmmm. I could put myself in that category, or maybe in "fatalistic humanitarian."

I've seen this one before. And, as with most of your photos, I like it better after taking several looks at it.

-- Mike Dixon (burmashave@compuserve.com), September 12, 2000.

I seem to remember making some inscrutable comment about the tech aspects of some picture I saw of yours somewhere, that could have been misconstrued as whining (What?... Me, whiney?).

Fatalism is too boring, cynicism is much more fun, especially at parties... t

-- tom meyer (twm@mindspring.com), September 13, 2000.

You're right Tom, "the sky is falling" doesn't really work well at parties. On the other hand, "The Mayans predicted the end of the world less than 24 hours from right now, let's go upstairs" seemed like a good idea at the time...

-- Jeff Spirer (jeff@spirer.com), September 13, 2000.

hey, i disagree...'the sky is falling' works great on goths...ahem. you have such a wonderful pool of models, Jeff. you're a lucky guy!!! and the best part is, you DO SOMETHING with it!!! envy envy envy...
