Considering the hard, midday lighting, the detail held up well and the contrast is under control. While the composition is well done, IMO it's the gorgeous background that really makes the subject pop.

What film and lens were used?

BTW, I have found that my home-made scrim made of 1/2" PVC tubing with a 3-mil sheet of clear plastic stretched over it is ideal for diffusing the light under these conditions. I'll meter while holding the scrim in position with one hand, then I'll trip the camera set on self-timer mode(usually in conjunction with mirror lock-up) and hold the scrim precisely in postion with both hands.

Great detail and background. I like the leaf this darning needle picked to pose for you; adds to the photo.
