Cholera Case Prompts New Jersey Officials to Place Lagoon Off Limits

By KYW's Ed Kasuba

The 17th Street lagoon in Ocean City, New Jersey, is off-limits to swimmers following the discovery of non-epidemic cholera.

The Cape May County Health Department says you should never swim in lagoons anyway but has now implemented an order telling people the 17th Street lagoon is off limits.

County Health Officer Louis Lamanna says this type of cholera bacteria naturally occurs in brackish waters along the shore:

"We've expanded our sampling to include the adjacent 18th Street lagoon and also the headwaters feeding into the two lagoons in an attempt to determine just how widespread this problem may be."

A man who swam in the 17th Street lagoon two weeks ago was sickened by cholera, although he may have gotten the disease by eating undercooked shellfish.

Cholera is an illness caused by Vibria choleraea bacterium. It infects people's intestines, causing diarrhea, vomiting and leg cramps.
