Water warning issued after Halifax-area sewage spill

HALIFAX (CP) - Another Halifax-area lake has been contaminated by a sewage spill. Residents of Portland Estates in Dartmouth are being warned not to drink the water from Morris Lake, or use it for recreational purposes, after human waste overflowed from a pumping station Tuesday.

A city official said an electrical problem at the station was the cause, but added that workers aren't sure when it happened or how much sewage actually spilled into the lake.

The provincial Environment Department was conducting tests for fecal coliform bacteria.

Last month, Sandy Lake near Bedford was also contaminated after a sewer main break. A boil order in that case has yet to be lifted.
