Four people have died after a collision between two cargo trains in northern Spain.

One of the trains ended up plunging into a river in Carranza.

A Basque regional police spokesman said: "We believe there were two workers on each train and we have recovered four bodies."

Both trains were loaded with aluminium coils when they collided on a stretch of track that runs above the Carranza River.

A state-owned FEVE railway spokesman said: "It was a head-on collision between two trains. There is only one rail in that stretch of the track. One of those trains wasn't supposed to be there."

Carranza lies between the cities of Bilbao and Santander on Spain's northern coast.
