At the risk of being bannished from the board..

How much of a beeter position are we in at the moment. Okay we are TOP OF THE LEAGUE but let's think about it, in the four corresponding fixtures last season we lost to Newton Heath, Beat Derby, Beat Tottenham and lost to Coventry. Therefore in comparison to last season we are three points better off, you could even argue that had Robson been in charge for longer before the Coventry game we probably would have won that as well. Chelsea will be the key, if we can beat them, we'll be 6 points better off than last year which is would get me excited a bit more.

9 points instead of 6 is a 50% difference. If we applied that to the 52 points we managed last season, we would have come second with 78 points ;-)

I agree that it's too early to get carried away, but at least we are looking at the right end of the league for once, not counting how many points we need to escape from relegation. yet, anyway...

I'd say about 31 more points :-)

I wonder what Tre ("prophet of doom") has to say, with him being Down Under he'll probably read the table upside down anyway!

It's okay to look at the corresponding fixtures but we have to take into account the previous matches and form/confidence. Apart from a couple of games like NH and Arse away every other game is going to be a test but one we can overcome on the right day.

Compare how much better a position we are in at the corresponding stage of the season. I mean we approach Chelsea on the back of three victories and are playing in front of 52,000 fans this year. Slightly different.

Try looking at it this way - we've beaten everyone we've played except NH (away), and kept clean sheets in the last two games.
Feel better?

Defensive performance is the key to our season and there are signs we may be getting that sorted. However, one or two injuries among the defenders and we're back in the dood.

Our true progress this season will need to be assessed by how we perform against the top 4 or 5 sides - starting on Saturday.

I agree Clarky, last night we beat Coventry with two reserve full backs and our last two first team centre backs. They looked quite solid after the first ten minutes!

I still believe the key is to crack London, obviously within that statement comes Arsenal and Chelsea which is in tandem to your view. But we must beat teams like Charlton and West Ham if we are to get near the European positions this year.

Beating any team in London would be such a huge boost for the teams confidence, doesn't matter who and that includes Leyton Orient.

Keep your pecker up Kegsy :-) Three wins in a row, 6 points clear of relegation and a manager that actually gets on with the team - that hasn't happened much in the last 4 years now has it? Not much use looking at last year's results, you couldn't ask for a lot more from this year's really.

Just trying to keep my feet on the ground, don't get me wrong I'm ecstatic at the start we've made but we're are not as good as we could be, tho' I'll find out for sure at the weekend.

Listening to the game on Metro, the commentators kept saying how we would be top if we won and Arse didn't and I was screaming at them to shut up as it would jinx us! Notice how nobody posted on here before the game saying "if we win........"

:-))) (Can't stop grinning this morning!)

Well pointed out Steph, the bane of my life last season and look at the result.

-- Anonymous, September 07, 2000

I think if you look back on last seasons postings, you'll know exactly how I feel about that subject. I've already cringed after reading someones comment about what position Chelsea will be in if they lose....PANIC

Is it just me or is everyone being truly sanguine this year .. mebys well all let our hair down once weve beaten Chelsea .. Then will yers all be happy , or will this go on all season until weve won the league . Howay man bask in the sunshine , you never know how far the clouds are away : - ))

Steph - you are so right! While I was trying to keep some sort of information going to the guys who did`t have a webcast, it kept popping into my head `We`re going to go top, we`re going to go top`! Needless to say I didn`t put it in print until after the final whistle!(:o)

I'm with Sting, spent far too much of my life being morose already:-)

-- Anonymous, September 07, 2000

Sting - even I agree with you. It's been three years since we were in this position.

Woooahhhhhhh there Tonto! The point being made is that whenever anyone predicts a league placing if we beat the next team we invariably lose i.e. West Ham and Bradford last season. I'm as upbeat about our start as anyone. I went to sleep last night with ToonToon ringing throughout my head, how else can I feel...;-)

If the mackems win on saturday they could go top half:-)

Bud.

I'm not the fekking prophet of doom. However, I'm not getting carried away (like hell I'm not. There's this little voice going waheeey in me had that I keep telling to shut up.) with our curent position, as I told a mate we'll see what the ladder looks like after ten games and then at the end of May. If we finish 6th and qualify for Europe, and bring two more top young English players, I'll call the seasn a resounding success.

Tre, G'day mate, see I was missing ya!
