A Continuation of why we shouldn;t care about the old firm

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

This is a continuation of SMB's thread about the old firm matches...

I was hoping you would be able to counter my claim that you were selective but to be honest (& if I have interpreted you correctly) you are being selectively bigotted. When you differentiate between old & new IRA argument do you mean the difference between 1916 IRA & the terrorists from the late sixties to the present day? or do you give some rosey 'freedom fighters' label to the killers of the 70's 80's & 90's as opposed to the 'real' or 'continuation' IRA.

It's the silly hand me down prejudices that are promoted by those L.P's with titles such as "Songs of Freedom" that keep the whole religious fight going instead of moving on, if your family has been in Britain for over a hundred years shouldn't you be grateful for the opportunities Britain offers rather than supporting organisations that hold it's people back whilst destroying lives?

The bottom line for me is I am glad Newcastle United has no connections with religion & I'm happy to wind up both Rangers & Celts for being so stupid to be swept up in the argument over an imaginary friend.

"Newcastle United has no connections with religion."

Are you sure?

I'm sorry that you're are so aggressive and after I had thought I was being conciliatory. I am also sorry that you made out that I support the I.R.A; especially after I spelled out that neither I, nor my family have ever supported terrorism. I did call them "gangsters" after all. I am appalled that you called me bigoted. If there is one thing that I am not, then bigoted is it sunshine. The reason I started the thread in the first place was to point out the bigotry of Rangers FC and its fans. As a Roman Catholic I feel I have every right to be offended by them and their anti-Popery ways. You may be interested to know that the vast majority of my mates are (if they have any faith) Church of England, also that I attended a state school and not a Roman Catholic school, also that I have never insulted anyone for simply being a Protestant or any other religion, colour or nationality and I am damn angry that you suggested that I would.

If I were a non white person I would be expected to hate the B.N.P. without anyone calling me a bigot. By the same token, as a Roman Catholic, I reserve the right to detest Rangers FC because that club and its fans, feel the same way about me and my fellow Catholics that the B.N.P do about Afro-Caribbean people or Asians or anyone who's not Anglo-Saxon.

As for the songs and the old I.R.A; yes I meant the I.R.A of the "Easter Rising" etc. I see no problem in singing or listening to old songs that glorified a people's struggle for freedom from British imperialism. I would support any of Britain's or anyone else's remaining colonies if they decided they wished to be independent.

Finally you said "be grateful for the opportunites Britain offers" which I fancy, implies that I am anti-British and pro-Irish. Well there are things that I love about this country and things that I hate about it. I'm not one of those people who thinks God is an Englishman but I don't work for the Iraqi secret service either. Sort of in the middle you I suppose. As for Ireland; it's my favourite country outside of England. I cherish my heritage and I love my ancestors who gave up everything to come here to make a better life. Most importantly I hate terrorists of any kind. Read things more carefully from now on please.

Finally, if anyone else reads this, I'm sorry for the turn that this thread has taken. I tried to end it yesterday but simply had to reply to the previous posting today.

Sentence should read: Sort of in the middle I suppose.

Hey gang, can't we just agree to condemn ALL violent extremists - including all of those, of whatever colour, persuasion or creed, who use religion, history, and in particular religious history, as a pretence for terrorism and violence against peaceloving people TODAY?

>>>>can't we just agree to condemn ALL violent extremists

That's too extreme for me Clarky. I'll just be mildly critical of most of them... (-;

Does that include Millwall, Cardiff City, Stoke City, and Feyenoord fans Clarky?

Only the violent extremists among them Stevo - presumably that's not all of them?
