Adams is probably right in saying he should not have had the captaincy taken from him. 10 wins in 11 games as captain. Who is to say he is not a better captain than Shearer. At least he is at the back where he can have some influence.

What a twat Adams is. Just for the record, since AS isn't involved and Dyer will only be playing a cameo role at best I hope england get stuffed by the french with every goal being Adams' fault. Wasn't he getting turned all over the place by charlton. At 33 he is past his sell by date, and why does he want to instigate an argument with AS? It also seems to me that the london press wants to stir something up with Us and london clubs. With BR 3 month old remarks about wise coming up again and now this.

Well hopefully it might spur us on to do something when we're away to London clubs this year.

What price Wise scoring against us next week?

to be fair to adams, what he said wasn't that bad. taken out of context by those nasty jouno types:

NEW England skipper Tony Adams risked the wrath of Newcastle United's fans last night when he suggested the team might benefit from the international retirement of Tyneside hero Alan Shearer.

Kevin Keegan's Euro 2000 flops attempt to start picking up the pieces in a friendly against France on Saturday.

Adams said the absence of Shearer could encourage the side to emerge from being "stuck" in a set pattern of play.

While not wanting to appear publicly critical of Shearer, his predecessor as England captain, Adams hinted that the situation could still offer a potential avenue for change.

Asked what could be altered from the summer, given that the squad was roughly the same, he replied: "Hopefully a few players will come through and obviously Alan's not going to be there.

"When you've got a dominant centre-forward like Alan, you kind of get stuck in a role that you want to play.

"I compare it with when we used to have Niall Quinn in the Arsenal side.

"He was a very dominant centre-forward and we had to put a lot of crosses in and use his strengths.

"Obviously, when Arsenal got Alan Smith it was more of a build-up kind of game, so certain individuals do influence the way that you play. That's not down to me though, that's a manager thing."

When asked if England could become a better side by using a new attacking approach, however, Adams simply replied: "Hopefully. That's what I'm aiming for."

Adams said he was delighted at being reappointed captain after being demoted from the position in the past by Glenn Hoddle in favour of Shearer.

"I am a very proud man, very grateful to Kevin for making me skipper," said the 33-year-old defender.

"Kevin gives me a group of players and I have to get on with the job for that hour-and-a-half.

"In effect I'm his eyes and ears on the pitch. I think defensively you can help a bit more maybe than forward players."

"I've pretty much been captain of my club side now for the past 12 years and won a few things along the road so hopefully that experience and knowledge will stand me in good stead."

As usual, someone's comments being twisted and turned to make things out worse than meant. Adams makes valid points. Though I do think it's a bit silly to say he'll be captain for the World Cup campaign. Just can't see him lasting long enough. His experience may be good for the short term anyhow.

According the The Ronnie, Eyore is now saying AS should never have taken the captaincy away from him.
Seeing as how he's been injured and/or 'recuperating' for most of the last 5 seasons he presumably feels England should have just continued on without a Captain until he was able to grace us with his presence again. Frankly, at this stage he should no longer even be in the squad.
Tosser!

Alan Smith stands to inherit all of Shearer's old England training clobber. After all, he has the right initials doesn't he?
